When I visited the Urban Roots Garden Classrooms in Reno, I was struck by the simplicity of their compost system. Each compost bin is made with straw bales.
To make a straw bale compost bin you need 2 -3 bales for 3 sides and one bale for the front. Additional compost bins can be made by sharing a “wall” with the other bin, reducing the total number of straw bales needed.
Bales of straw are usually quite inexpensive in the fall. I usually pick up a couple to insulate my strawberries through the winter. I think I will be adding to my order this year.
