I thought it would be fun to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with something green. And you know I like veggies, so what better way to celebrate than with a healthy green smoothie.
In The New Green Smoothie Diet: Going Green Never Tasted So Good Hilary Greenleaf talks about the benefits of green smoothies and gives recipes and tips for making them. She includes smoothie recipes for detoxifying the body, increasing energy levels, improving the immune system, and weight loss plan.
Hilary’s book is to the point and her recipes are easy to make. They’re delicious too! There are no special powders or weird ingredients for you to buy; all of the ingredients are readily available at your local grocery store. In fact, I had the ingredients for most of the recipes on hand. Her recipes are primarily comprised of whole fruits and vegetables and use water as the liquid.
I am not in a position to verify the accuracy of the health claims in this book, but Hilary does cite studies so you can do additional research if you wish. I can verify that all of the recipes contain wholesome, delicious fruits and vegetables. Hilary has given me permission to share a recipe so you can see for yourself how healthy they are.
Heart-Healthy Green Smoothie
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon flax seed
1 apple without the core
1/2 cup strawberries
1/2 cup blueberries or raspberries
2 cups spinach
1 orange peeled
2 cups water
She suggests adding 1 teaspoon of one of the following spices to the smoothie for their anti-inflammatory properties: cinnamon, ginger, thyme, turmeric, or cilantro. I added cinnamon.
Directions:
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
This smoothie ended up looking brown as the red from the berries blended with the green of the spinach. The flavor of the fruit over powers the spinach and you will not even know that it is there.
