Crock Pot Split Pea Soup

Ingredients
  • 1 pound bag of dried split peas
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 2 stalks of celery, sliced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons parsley
  • 2 teaspoons basil
  • 2 teaspoons marjoram
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 5 - 6 cups water
  • ½ cup sherry (optional)
Directions
Fastest Version:
  1. Put peas in a large pot over a high heat and bring to a boil. Turn off heat and put the lid on the pot. Let sit for one hour.
  2. Drain peas and place them in the crockpot. Add all of the other ingredients, using only 5 cups of water. Place lid on crockpot, and cook on high for 4 hours. Remove meat from bone and discard bone. You can mash the peas, spoon them into the blender, or use an immersion blender to make the soup creamier.
Fast Version:
  1. Fill the glass bowl with 6 cups of water and microwave on high for 5 minutes or until it is boiling.
  2. Put all ingredients in crockpot. Pour hot water over them. Place lid on crockpot and cook on high for 5 hours. Remove meat from bone and discard bone. You can mash the peas, spoon them into the blender, or use an immersion blender to make the soup creamier.
Slow version:
  1. Place all ingredients in crockpot including 6 cups of hot tap water. Place lid on crockpot and cook on low for 8 hours. Remove meat from bone and discard bone. You can mash the peas, spoon them into the blender, or use an immersion blender to make the soup creamier.
Notes
This soup can be frozen.
