What to Consider When Purchasing a Baby Crib

How to choose a crib for your baby

The baby’s crib is somewhere where she will spend lots of time, especially when you first bring her home. You want to be sure that you purchase one that fits in your home and is safe for your infant. Below are several considerations to make when purchasing the right crib for your baby.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Baby Crib

1. Think about safety standards.

You want a baby crib  that will keep your baby safe as she sleeps during the night. Be sure that the bed you are thinking about will meet all safety standards set by the government. The rules changed in 2011, so it’s important to learn the new requirements before you go shopping. For example, drop-side cribs have been found to be hazardous to your baby’s safety. It’s best to stay away from them and opt for stationary sides.

2. Factor in the space available in the nursery.

You must have enough room for your baby’s crib, without it hindering anything else in the nursery. Allow enough space for any nearby doors to fully open and close. Place the crib where there will be no wires or cord running close to the bed. Once you’ve decided on the space, measure it so you can purchase a crib that will properly fit in the place.

3. Don’t forget the crib mattress.

The baby’s bed will need a soft, durable mattress for your little one to rest his head on. The mattresses available come in different materials, and it is important you know how each one will hold up. Foam is typically the cheapest but may not be made of organic materials like other more expensive models. Take the construction as well as price into consideration when you buy the mattress along with the crib.

4. Look at any features the crib offers.

There are some benefits that certain cribs have over others. A rollaway feature is nice if you need to move the crib from one room to the other often. If you want to care for your baby in the living room during the day for example, a bed on wheels is perfect. Just be aware of door frame sizes when buying.

Having the ability to adjust the height of the mattress is also a great feature, and one that will keep your little one safe as they start to grow and stand up in their crib.

Factoring in the above aspects will help you purchase the perfect crib for your new child. Above all, make sure the bed is safe so you don’t worry about your newborn as he sleeps through the night.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
