5 Indoor Fall-Themed Games for Kids

Autumn has always been a fun time in our family. We have loads of fun playing around in the leaves and playing tag in the brisk, cool afternoons. Although most fall days are great for playing outside, there are the occasional cold snaps and storms that drive the fun inside. When that happens, my girls still expect to have a load of fun. To keep the fall spirit alive, we have come up with several fall-themed games to play inside. Below are favorite indoor games to play during the fall.

Pin the Tail on the Turkey

When the girls were younger, we loved to play games that involved blindfolds. They loved to watch mommy and daddy “stumble” our way through anything like that. Our favorite is a simple game of pin the tail on the donkey. During the fall holidays, we pin the tail on the donkey instead. For those that have not played this game, simply place a picture of a turkey on the wall without a tail. Cut out some tails and add some tape so that they stick to the wall. Spin the player around blindfolded a time or two and then have them place the tail on the wall where they think the tail would go. It still gives out tons of laughs with the younger kids.

Human Leaf Blowers

This particular game is one that I look forward to as much as my girls. It is incredibly simple but tons of fun. Place two leaves on an empty table. Two people get behind the leaves and see who can blow it off the other side first!

Bowling for Gourds

All you need is a hallway or open area, a gourd and some old cans or two-liter bottles to play this game.  Simply stack up the “pins” (two-liter bottles work best I think) and then bowl them down with the gourd. What makes this so fun is that the gourd is not especially easy to roll straight. This will give you hours of fun.

Hiding the Pumpkins

Pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes. Gather up as many as you have and play hide and seek. Kids love hunting for stuff and this gives them the chance to do so inside. Make sure you lay rules about dangerous areas being off limits and things of that nature.

Bobbing for Apples

It is an old classic, but it is still a ton of fun. This is a game that is still possible inside. Simply fill up your pail but place it in the bathtub. This way when it spills over the sides you will have no cleanup. Bobbing for apples is simply good clean fun.

These are only a handful of the games that we play. Can you think of some other indoor games that your family likes to play during the fall?

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
