Just in time for the travel season, Erika is sharing tips for traveling with children.

5 Tips for traveling with children

Traveling with children can be tricky. Often times, parents will have anxiety about taking any type of trip with kids. Regardless of the length of the trip, being prepared is half of the battle. Being well prepared will reduce the anxiety for the child and the parents. Check out these tips to make traveling with your children a little bit easier.

5 Tips for Traveling with Children

1. Map Your Trip Out – Once you have decided where your trip is going to be, check out the route and plan stops. Stops allow the children to have a chance to get out and stretch their legs just like adults need to. Children can get restless regardless of what they have to occupy them during the ride. If you are taking a longer trip, consider stopping at a park for a lunch if the weather permits.

2. Pack Activities – During the trip the children should have options of things to play with or things that will occupy them. You can take a few of their favorite toys along for the trip. Having multiple options of things to occupy your children is a great idea as they might get bored of playing with same toy during the entire trip.

3. Pack Snacks and Drinks – If you are taking a long trip, your children will get hungry and thirsty. Packing snacks and drinks are a great way to save money while you are traveling as well. If you will not be stopping during your traveling, be sure that the snacks are car friendly to avoid a huge mess. Drinks can be made prior to leaving the house if you are taking a short trip. If you are taking a longer trip, consider packing something that does not require a lot of work such as water bottles with flavor packs.

4. Schedule Your Trip Around Nap Time – If you are taking a short trip, be sure that your child is well rested. When your child is well rested and happy, there will be less anxiety for the child. If you are taking a longer trip, such as a vacation, planning for the child to take their nap during their normally schedule time is a wonderful idea. Be sure to plan your leaving time to allow for their regular nap time schedule.

5. Be Prepared for Accidents and Messes – Children will be children no matter where they are. If you are going on vacation, of course you brought extra clothes. But are those extra clothes in easy access to you? Make sure that you pack extra clothes into the diaper bag that you will have close to you. If your child no longer requires a diaper bag, pack a small bag with extra clothes and other items that you might need and pack it near you and your child during the ride. Accidents and messes are bound to happen in the car or while you are stopped during your travels.

What ways do your prepare for a day out with your child? What ways do you prepare for a family vacation traveling?

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
