Peacock Swamp: Book 1: The Nine

A Review of Peacock Swamp: Book 1: The Nine

This is a MUST READ.   Author Katie Femia is an amazing first time writer who has firmly planted her feet in the Young Adult Dystopian genre with her new book- Peacock Swamp: Book 1:The Nine. But don’t be misled by the categorizing of it as  Young Adult fiction- It is a delicious read for any age.  I literally could not put the book down from the moment I started reading I was drawn into the swamp and her characters personalities.  They are engaging and endearing, from the lead- Vita to each member of her family and even the unlikeable protagonist.  I cried, I laughed out loud, and felt my heart racing as I made the journey with Vita.

I adore a book that can wrench out my emotions, and this one did not disappoint.  If you enjoyed books like The Hunger Games, and Divergent you will not want to miss this one!  Set in the future during uncertain times this book plays well on our fears of what could become of the government and medical systems. My only complaint about this book is that eventually the ride was over, and it left me hungry for more, wanting to see where the characters end up. It will be an agonizing wait for the next book in the series.  Now available on Amazon, you can purchase a paperback, or if you cant wait for the mailman to deliver your copy, it is also available as a download for your Kindle. Happy Reading!

Synopsis:
In 2064, The Nine are preparing to assemble. This board of individuals is President Madame LaFonte’s solution to an ailing nation in search of medical care. While it seemed ideal at first, the folks of the borough are quickly discovering it isn’t quite what it seems. The lucky ones are issued a red gown and another chance at life. That’s the happy ending. However, not everyone gets a red gown. The others have to make their own second chance at life–if they’ve got the heart to do what it takes.
When the superstitions of the swamplands run just as deep as the mud, every little bit of luck helps. They named her Vitalia, a name that means life. But her name was the only advantage that she had. In need of a heart transplant, Vita leaves Peacock Swamp behind to stand before The Nine. With her family by her side, they run into the dangers that government healthcare has created: an underground medical clinic that services the rejected citizens…for a price. Her whole life has been a struggle. Why should her death be any different?

Author Bio:
Three years ago Katie Femia took a leap of faith, leaving her career as an elementary school teacher behind to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. That leap paid off as she has found herself enjoying the day to day musings of writing for a variety of blogs and websites as a regular contributor. She never has a dull day, covering topics such as home finance, DIY projects, money saving strategies and everything in between. And while a number of manuscripts still slumber in a kitchen drawer, The Nine : Peacock Swamp Book One is her first published novel. She lives in South Bend, Indiana with her husband and three children Olivia, Carmela, and Dino, where they enjoy Hoosier favorites such as camping, lightning bugs, and sweet corn. When she isn’t writing, Katie can be found making over vintage furniture pieces and scouring local thrift spots for pieces she features in her own handmade & vintage business. You can follow her on Facebook.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
