If you have a child who loves dinosaurs, or even creative play for that matter, this DIY dinosaur play set is a wonderful way to get them active and get their imaginations flowing. Typically a play set like this would cost you big bucks in the store, but this is one set you can easily craft yourself. Take a look below at how to create your own DIY dinosaur play set from just a handful of dollar store supplies and a piece of faux moss. The end result is a prehistoric sure to invite the children in your life to enjoy hours of fun!

Supplies needed:

  • Faux moss/foam square (Found at Michael’s Craft Store for around $5)
  • Dinosaur set ($1 for a package of two at Dollar Tree, also includes small tree)
  • 1 bag of stones or pebbles ($1 a bag at Dollar Tree or FREE in your own yard)
  • Tinfoil
  • Scissors
  • Crafting moss or real moss, grass clippings
  • Plastic leaves, plants, or foliage of your choice
  • Optional plastic characters such as frogs, lizards

Directions:

1. Begin by creating the landscape for your dinosaurs to roam in. You can start by creating a lake or pond for them. Simply cut a circle shape out of tinfoil. This will act as your pond. Apply some glue to the back (or not, if you think your child will want to move it) and press it to the moss.

2. Add some stones around the tinfoil to define the space. You can then scatter the rocks to create more of a landscape. We didn’t attach the rocks, we just left them loose so kids could move them as they wanted.

3. You can now start filling in the landscape with the moss. Simple apply it to the areas as you wish. Once the moss goes down you will really notice the landscape starting to take shape.

4. Now is a great time to add your characters. We used a pair of dinosaurs and also added in a plastic lizard.

5. Fill in the play set with plenty of foliage. You want your dinosaurs to have plenty to eat, after all! We placed silk leaves onto the landscape and even in the grips of one of our creatures.

Your dinosaur play set is now ready to be enjoyed! Kids will love telling a story through imaginative play using the dinosaurs and other accessories. When done, place all of the items in a plastic bag for safe keeping. The moss square can really be used over and over again, as can the accessories.

So head to your local dollar and craft store and grab the supplies to make your own dinosaur play set like the one you see here! It is a fantastic way to beat those boredom blues and get kids using their imagination.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
