Does your family have any special traditions for Father’s Day? Do your kids help pick out a store bought gift for dad every year? Crafts and homemade gifts are fun too, but either way coming up with something for dad can get tricky. This year, have your kids show dad just how much he means to them by writing it out loud and proud with a personalized t-shirt.

Prep the shirt with a few easy steps, then hand it over to your kids so they can take it from there. When finished, this Kid Printed Father’s Day T-Shirt may look too good to be homemade, but your kids have done all the work. No ordering fees or waiting on a professional printer. Dad will love all of the effort your little ones put into filling in each letter, and he’ll have a message from his kids he can proudly display on his chest.

Father's Day T-Shirt Supplies

Materials:

  • 1 plain white t-shirt, prewashed
  • Fabric markers
  • Printer, printer paper
  • Scissors
  • Washable fabric pencil
  • T-shirt form or piece of heavy cardboard

Instructions:

1. Choose your message for dad. Keep in mind the space allowance across the front of the shirt. My kids chose a short and sweet, “Best dad ever.”

2. Type your message out and print it out on computer paper. My message was printed in Avenir font in 172 point size. If you choose to go with another font, just make sure it’s thick enough for your kiddos to fill in.

3. Cut out the letters.

4. Lay one letter at a time on your t-shirt in the correct order and gently trace with your fabric pencil. Use a ruler or other straight edge to help keep your message straight if needed. This outline will wash out later.

5. Once you’ve got an outline of your message, stuff a piece of cardboard inside your t-shirt to avoid bleeding through.

6. Set your children up at a table or flat workspace and hand over the fabric markers. Let them color in the letters however they’d like. shirt5

7. Allow your t-shirt to dry overnight and wash in cold water before wearing.

I love how the outline of the fabric pencil washes away giving the illusion that the kids wrote the message out all on their own. This is a great project for kids of any age. So what if they draw outside of the lines? Remember, their personal touch is what makes this gift so adorable.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
