Where to find stylish maternity clothes on a budget

It’s no secret that maternity clothing is more expensive just because it’s considered to be a specialty clothing category. On top of that, the general assumption is that you are in a bind therefore you will shell out more money and not ask too many questions. This is quite unfortunate! The last thing most of us want to do is spend extra money for a temporary wardrobe update when trying to save up for all the things baby will need. At the same time, we want to look and feel as good as possible at a time in our lives when we are already beyond vulnerable. This was a huge frustration for me when I first became pregnant!  I am all about spending as little as I can get away with but at the same time, I refuse to compromise on quality. Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks to finding inexpensive yet stylish maternity wear.

Where to Find Stylish Maternity Clothes on a Budget

First and foremost go through your pre-pregnancy closet and figure out what items will convert well into maternity clothes. Low rise bottoms will most likely fit your through the entire duration of your pregnancy and not get in the way of your growing baby bump. Not only are dresses and tops with empire waistlines flattering on growing belly, they are also handy at camouflaging your bump. These should fit you for a while. Same goes for any cardigans and blazers you might have in your closet. Once you have taken stock of what you already have, make a list of clothing items you need to fill the gaps.

Here are some money saving tips to keep in mind now that you have a list and are ready to go shopping:

Start by looking for free maternity clothing. No it’s not too good to be true! Check out 5 Places to Find Free Maternity Clothes.

Many of your favorite retailers offer maternity clothing in store and online. Get to know their sale and clearance cycles. For example, Motherhood Maternity offers a wide variety of maternity wear. The good news is that Motherhood has very frequent sale and clearance events. If you find something you would like to purchase, just wait a few weeks and get the item on a sale or BOGO event. Motherhood makes it easy to keep track of such events thought their e-mail newsletter. For more ideas on this, check out my Top 7 Places to Buy Cheap Cute Maternity Clothes.

Knowing that your bump will keep growing and changing shape, invest in extra-long tops. These will grow with you and help you avoid having to upgrade tops multiple times through your pregnancy.

Since your body changes in unpredictable ways during pregnancy, I recommend not purchasing items you think you may need in a few month. Invest wisely into just a few items you need now.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
