Alternative to Oil Cooking Spray

Ounce for ounce oil from spray cans is more expensive than much higher quality oils. I prefer to splash a little oil in a pan and then use a basting brush to thoroughly coat the dish with oil: August2010 066
It only takes a second. I have found that silicone basting brushes are easier to clean up than bristled basting brushes.

I also use leftover butter wrappers to grease the pans of some baked goods.

Have you found an alternative to spray on oils?

I need to do this. I have been thinking about alternatives to cooking spray, but hadn’t thought about this option. I do love my silicone basting brush. It cleans up so nicely in the dishwasher. Thanks so much for the tip!

Yes, yes, and yes! 🙂 Plus, you’re not getting the chemicals from a can. =D

I will freeze butter stick wrappers if it's cookie season and know they'll be used quickly, but won't freeze them for long term. I've been looking at the pampered chef spritzer, too, and may have to take the dive.

Great idea! I get so tired of buying the spray cans. I need to get a silicone brush. That would be easier than my bristle one that seems to be hard to clean and get dry.

I like to use leftover rice for stir fries and soups. I remember when I was little, a friend’s grandfather used to make some type of breakfast dish with rice and eggs but I cannot remember how he did it. I stopped using the aerosols quite a while ago. I have a Pampered Chef kitchen spritzer I use. But, like you, I save butter wrappers and use them. I keep a little ziploc bag in the freezer and place the wrappers in there until I need one. I also use the silicone brushing technique.

I love the pump non-aerosol oil sprayer. 🙂

When my sister moved to Mongolia, instead of packing up her Pampered Chef spritzer, she loaned it to me. I like it a lot!

I, too, use a refillable spray bottle. I always use either peanut oil or extra light olive oil in mine. 🙂

I stick my hand in a used baggie then stick it in either my coconut oil or butter or lard and then spread it around. (sometimes I don't care and skip the bag)
Getting rid of the propellant was a milestone for me!

I've often thought of the refillable oil sprayer too but haven't bought one yet. I'll have to try the oil and brush way to see if I like that or not. The store bought sprays sure get expensive–I've tried the cheaper brands but they sprayers don't work very well and the taste is off to me. Thanks for the idea!! Have a great day.

I have been eyeing a refillable oil sprayer for quite a while. Maybe I need to add it to my wish list. 🙂

I just got a pampered chef kitchen spritzer. So far, I love it. It lets you make your own spray from whatever oil you choose. Easy peasy.

after a long time of being frustrated by trying to brush oil on (I could never get it thin enough), I bought a refillable oil sprayer. It works just like Pam or whatever, except that you pump it a few times, and you can refill it as much as you want.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
