Last week, we shared a list of foods that freeze well. One way to make sure that the food your freeze gets used and doesn’t go to waste is to clearly mark all of your items with the date and what’s in the bag. This will allow you to quickly see what day you put the items in the freezer and what exactly it is you froze.

To make it easier to keep track of your frozen items we have created Printable Freezer Labels. The Printable Freezer Labels are designed to fit Avery 5164 shipping labels, though I have found that a Universal Labels work and are less expensive.

You can further organize your freezer by putting a Freezer Inventory List on the outside of your freezer. Add an item to the list when you freeze it and then cross it off when you remove it. Never lose food in your freezer again!

Don’t forget if meat is going to be in your freezer for longer than a month or two, to repackage it so it doesn’t get freezer burn. You can find more tips on freezing food and a list of foods that freeze well here.

I did a big inventory list on the outside of my freezer and my boyfriend thought I was crazy. lol. Clearly, he doesn’t do the cooking. It’s so nice and helpful. So far I’ve saved a lot of food from going bad and getting freezer burn. Your list and labels areso cute, I think I’ll print a few up to use. Thanks so much for sharing!

Great idea, Alea. My mom did an inventory of my big freezer when she was here and it has been such a help–it was so much nicer to sit and plan meals with the list than having to dig through to see what I had. I like your idea of keeping the list on the outside of the freezer so you can add to it as you go.

Such a great idea, especially with all the sauces I’m freezing right now!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
