I sincerely try to avoid food waste. And I am especially passionate about not letting my organic, minimally processed whole milk go to waste! Today I am sharing some tips for what I make (or do) when my milk is about to expire at The Thrifty Mama.

After I wrote the post, I had a few more ideas for preventing milk products from going to waste.

Cheese can easily be frozen. I like to shred my cheese and freeze it in 2 cup portions, but if you don’t have time to grate your cheese, you can freeze a block of cheese. If you want very finely grated cheese, it is easier to create with a frozen block of cheese. If you want larger, coarsely grated cheese, thaw it in the refrigerator before you grate it.

Yogurt Ice Cubes (640x475)
Yogurt can be frozen. I freeze yogurt in an ice tray to create starter for my next batch of yogurt. Each cube holds 2 tablespoons of yogurt, which is exactly what my yogurt recipe calls for. I also freeze it in one cup portions to use in recipes like Corn Casserole.

Pudding Pops (640x453)
Leftover Pudding makes great pudding pops! Just spoon the pudding into popsicle molds and freeze. Leftover pudding is a rarity, so sometimes I make a batch just so I can freeze it.

Visit The Thrifty Mama and share what you do when your milk is about to expire.

And when the kids are bigger, waste is not an issue. We can go through 5 lbs of cheese in about two weeks now! Still, thanks for sharing these great tips.

I like to make pudding, too. the pudding pops are a great idea! Freezing the milk in recipe-size portions is also good.

My favorite recipe for milk that's about to expire is homemade mac & cheese because I can make a big pan for dinner and can also throw in any leftover bits of ham or chicken and whatever vegies I have available.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
