The secret to good ribs is in the sauce? Well, the sauce has a lot to do with it but also the cooking method. There is great controversy over what type of rib to get, what way to cook them to create tender meat without burning it in the process. Our family goes the lazy route with boneless ribs and has for many years loved the method of boiling prior to tossing them on the grill. Not only does it ensure the meat is cooked through, but it also gives the time for the meat to tenderize some. Not every family likes this method, but I wanted to share what works for us with you to give a whirl. Also, sharing the awesome sauce recipe that we love is part of this great for the BBQ season share! Remember this sauce is good on almost any grilled meat, not just ribs.
Katie's Homemade Rib Sauce and How to Cook Ribs
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Brown Sugar
- ½ Cup Molasses
- 2 Tablespoons Roasted Garlic Minced You can find this pre-roasted, minced and in a jar in your grocery. I prefer roasting whole bulbs of garlic on low in my oven for 2-3 hours then mincing myself
- 1 Cup Tomato Sauce
- ½ Cup Water
- 1/8 Cup Worcestershire Sauce
- 1/8 Cup Soy Sauce
- 2 Teaspoons Minced Dried Onion
- 2 Teaspoons Paprika
- 1 Tablespoon Yellow Mustard
Instructions
- In medium saucepan, stir sauce ingredients over medium heat until well incorporated. Heat the sauce for an additional 4-5 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat and set aside.
- In large stockpan, place ribs of your choice (bone in or boneless) along with 5-6 cups water, 1 can low sodium chicken stock, 1 small onion sliced, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons black pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and cover allowing to boil for 20-25 minutes on low-medium heat. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Brush ribs with pre-made sauce. Place on heated grill for 4-5 minutes on each side brushing with sauce between turnings. Since meat is already cooked through only leave on heat as long as it takes to get a nice grill char and flavor per your preference. Serve with a side of sauce for dipping.

I like using boneless ribs as well, but they are hard to get here in the UK. Katie’s sauce is literally making my mouth water as I read about it. I’m pinning it to try on ribs, chicken, pork…just about anything really! It sounds SO good!
