How to make spices from scratch

You can save money by making your own spices mixes. Many like poultry seasoning mix and pumpkin pie spice can be made from herbs and spices that you already have in your pantry.

Making your own spices mixes is frugal, but it also allows you to tailor them to suit your family’s taste. You might want to start with a quarter batch and then adjust it to your preferences.

Homemade Spice Mix Recipes

Poultry Seasoning Mix – sprinkle this on your turkey or chicken before roasting.

Herbs de Provence – delicious on roast chicken or in soups.

Seasoned Salt (or Herbamare Substitute) – add a pinch to vegetable dishes.

Italian Seasoning Mix – Use this to make your own spaghetti sauce.

Taco Seasoning Mix – Add this to your hamburger and beans for tasty tacos.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix – Add this to pies, cookies, or sprinkle on sweet potato fries.

When I find spice coupons, I use them to buy the base ingredients that I need (like cinnamon or celery root) rather than spending money on a mix that I can make myself. You can save even more by drying and preserving herbs yourself and then using those herbs in your spice mixes.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
