This Marshmallow Mixed Berry Pie recipe takes a little bit of time to create, but the effort will be greatly appreciated by your Little Bear!

Little Bear's marshmallow Mixed Berry Pie Recipe

My youngest son formerly spent a large portion of each day pretending to be Little Bear. For many months he even called me Mother Bear instead of mommy. He often requested that I make a Marshmallow Mixed Berry Pie for him. I searched for a recipe and could not find one, so I dreamed this pie up for him.

I used raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. Feel free to substitute blueberries for one of the berries or create your own unique combination of 1 1/2 cups of berries.

Marshmallow Mixed Berry Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • A pie crust.  I used an Oreo cookie pie crust, but you can use whatever pie crust you wish. If you use raw pie dough, you will need to bake the pie crust before it is filled.

Pie Filling Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 20 large marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup raspberries
  • 1/2 cup blackberries
  • 1/2 cup diced strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Whipped Cream Ingredients:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

  1. In a large saucepan, heat the milk, marshmallows, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and sugar over medium-low heat until the marshmallows are melted (stir frequently).
  2. Remove the mixture from the heat; let the mixture sit to cool to room temperature. Then place it in the refrigerator for about 20 – 30 minutes or until the berry mixture is slightly thickened.
  3. Before you remove the berry mixture from the refrigerator, make the whipped cream. Beat the heavy whipping cream on high until soft peaks form. Beat in vanilla and powdered sugar until firm peaks form. Make sure not to over-beat or the cream will then become lumpy.*
  4. Add 1/2 of the whipped cream to the marshmallow-berry mixture and blend. Refrigerate the rest of the whipped cream until needed.
  5. Pour the mixture into a pie shell. Chill for 2 hours.
  6. Top with the remainder of the whipped cream and chill for another 2 –4 hours. If you forget to make it early enough for it to set by dinner time, you can plop it in the freezer and serve it frozen. The trick is to act like you intended to serve it frozen!

*If you become distracted by your Little Bear and happen to over-beat the whipped cream, you can fix it: Run a spatula under hot water, quickly dry it, then use it to stir the lumpy cream. Repeat 2 –3 times until the cream is smooth again. The warm spatula will soften the cream. You can also use the hot spatula trick to repair frosting on a cake.

Little Bears pie in the cartoon calls for “twice as many raspberries as blackberries,” just the way Little Bear likes it.

I actually read about Mixed Berry Marshmallow Pie in “Jewels” by ‘Danielle Steel’. I was so inspired by it and I decided to see if there were any recipes for it. But now that I think of it, I remember seeing the ‘Little Bear’ episode when ‘Mother Bear’ makes the pie. So delighted to give this a try! Thank you!

Well now I am going to have to read “Jewels”. I love when authors incorporate memorable food scenes in their books.

Just wanted to say that My “little bear” is now 18 years old tomorrow and LOVES his mixed berry marshmallow pie! I made him his first one when he was 4 years old and have been every since. It’s one of his favorites! He has never really been a cake kinda kid so pies every year for his birthday. I make mine a little different tho. Have never written down a receipe but I bake My pie with a double crust. turns out wonderful. But today I’m going to try yours for a change. Hope he likes it, it sure looks delish! Thank you Maurice Sendack for years of love and enjoyment! One of the most tender and purest of heart stories for children! My 15 year old daughter has shown the same love as my son and I know they will both share the family tradition with their children someday!

Happy birthday to your little bear. My sister still refers to her son (who is also 18) as little bear even though he is well over 6 feet tall. 🙂

I would love to know if there was a “real” marshmallow mixed berry pie recipe. Every once in a while I do a search, but I haven’t come up with a source for the reference.

It is also aired on the Tiny Pop channel in the UK (available free-to-air on Freesat and maybe also Freeview) so there might be a few UK viewers searching for this recipe too. I know that’s what bought me here…

My son LOVED Little Bear when he was younger. (He's 9 now.) And I loved how gentle the show is, he would always calm down while watching it. I love the theme song and incidental music, too! Such a nice change from really loud, active shows.

Melissa, since LB is no longer on the air I ordered the DVD's from a Canadian company. It is referred to on the Dreams and Make Believe DVD. I think being able to easily watch favorite episodes again allows for certain things to make a greater impression. 😀
