To minimize the mess when cutting up a watermelon, place a cookie sheet under your cutting board:
June2010 042 Even though my cutting board has a juice groove, it cannot catch all of the juice that a watermelon produces. The cookie sheet prevents my entire counter from becoming a sticky mess.

I wished I knew about this tip this past Friday. My daughter came over(her day off), and we had a watermelon. There was,(of course), a big mess. We had newspapers down, but still it was a mess. I will tell my hubby, cause he is the one that does all of the cutting, and slicing.

Good idea! I usually put newspaper under mine-but this would contain it better I'll bet!

I had been putting my cutting board atop some paper towels, and still had a sticky counter — not AS messy, but still…

I LOVE this tip = thanks for sharing!!

Rebecca – That is a great idea. I know peelings are bad for the garbage disposal, so I usually block off the drain. But then I have to scoop out the peelings to put in the compost bin.

I use a paper towel and/or the plastic bag that carrots come in as a "target" for my carrot and potato peelings. Yes, some land off the mat, but for the most part I just fold and toss when I am done peeling. And don't even get me started on where the peelings go when my daughter, who is eight inches shorter than me, peels…just visualize that she is not pointing downward toward the counter! 😉

That's a wonderful tip! I don't have a cookie sheet like that since they are bigger than my tiny oven! But now I'll have to look for one at a yard sale or thrift shop, just to use for watermelon and other messy stuff!

A very timely tip; I have a watermelon sitting on my counter right now. I'll definitely be trying this one soon.

    LOVE the new look! WOW!!!

Brilliant!!! That sure is a "why didn't I think of that!" sort of solution.

I just cut up watermelon last night with, of course, a mess all over. I will definitely use this idea the next time.

    Thanks so much for sharing!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
