Whether you buy your produce at a farmers’ market, shop at the grocery store, or grow your own fruits and vegetables, the easiest way to create delicious recipes is to use in-season produce. By using in-season fruits and vegetables in your recipes, not only will you enjoy produce at the peek of freshness, you will save money on your grocery budget.

Fruit based desserts usually require less sugar, so you can create delicious, low-calorie desserts by using naturally sweet fruit as the main ingredient. The combination of sweet fruits with savory vegetables produce mouth-watering appetizers and side dishes for summer entertaining.

  • Apricots
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries

  • Watermelon

The best time to introduce your family to a new vegetable is when it is in-season. That is when it will be the most flavorful. I have found that cooking most vegetables until they are just fork-tender makes them more appetizing. There is just something about having a little crunch to them that makes them more appealing.

Don’t forget summer is a great time to use fresh herbs in place of dried herbs in your recipes. If you have a recipe that calls for dried herbs, but you want to use fresh herbs from your garden, then use 3 times as much of the fresh herbs as the recipe calls for in dried herbs.

You can grill summer veggies to add even more flavor to your side dishes.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
