The Power of the Peanut – A Gift from Nature

I had my last baby at 40. My last child is also my most active child. We aren’t talking kind of energetic, we are talking a nuclear powered energetic child. I often share funny things he does or says with you on my Facebook page, but it is really hard to capture how active he is in those stories. He bounces out of bed at the crack of dawn and bounces through the entire day. Seriously. The kid doesn’t walk anywhere: he runs, he bounces, he skips, and he jumps. My husband and I tried to copy all of his movements one day at the park and gave up after 5 minutes. We didn’t feel too bad because we know that even our other kids have trouble keeping up with him. I am pretty sure he could exhaust a professional athlete. So I need all the help I can get!

I have discovered that if I snack on carbs in the afternoon it saps my energy and makes me want NEED a mid-afternoon nap. Which would be fine if my son didn’t give up naps before the age of two. Since I need to be alert to keep my son alive, I grab real food like Planters Peanuts and carrots when I need snack. The protein in peanuts provides me with the energy I need to get through the afternoon and they don’t cause a crash like crackers or cookies do.

Since I have to choose wholesome meals and snacks to remain alert,  I pack containers of peanuts, carrots, and apples slices for myself while I am packing snacks for my son. That way I don’t make a bad food decision if I get hungry away from home.

Harness the power of the peanut - a gift from nature

Peanuts are filling little gifts from nature: a serving of peanuts has 7 ounces of protein and 6 essential nutrients including Vitamin E, magnesium, iron, and niacin. And they are easily portable, which is really important when you spend your day running after a little boy.

Here is a funny video from Planters Peanuts about harnessing the power of the peanut. I seriously need to harness all the power I possibly can!

“Harnessing the power of the peanut is about accepting the gifts that nature gives us.” – Mr. Peanut

I was blessed with an unexpected child at 40. Now it is up to me to use the gifts that nature gives us to keep myself healthy and active so I can fully enjoy him.

These videos with Mr. Peanut are hilarious! And peanuts are a snack that we always keep in the house because it’s healthier than a lot of the other types of snacks out there.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
