While they are cute and colorful looking, dandelions are no joke! They can quickly smother out your other garden plants and can create unsightly weed patches in your yard. Getting rid of dandelions use to mean spending hours on your knees pulling them up, but the truth is you don’t have to do this anymore. Sure you can try chemicals, but that means posing a risk to kids and animals. The good news is, there are many natural ways to repel dandelions that don’t include harsh chemicals or back breaking labor. Take a look below at 5 Natural Ways to Prevent Dandelions so you can enjoy a yard that is weed free.
5 Natural Ways to Prevent Dandelions
1. Boil them away. This is one of the easiest ways to naturally prevent dandelions. Take boiling water and pour it directly over the dandelions. In a few days you will see that the dandelion will wilt and die. Be careful when using this method so you don’t burn yourself in the process. You can use this method on grass, but keep the boiling water away from other flowers and plants as it could kill them as well.
2. Mow before they seed. You want to mow over the dandelions while they are still yellow and before they turn to white puffs. At this point, they will have hundreds of seeds just waiting to pour out onto your yard. Don’t let them get to this point, instead mow them or pluck them while still yellow and in bloom. Even if you can’t mow right away, at least pull the dandelion up.
3. Try vinegar. One thing you should note about this method is that vinegar WILL kill grass, so only use this method on concrete and sidewalks where dandelions are an issue. Pour the vinegar onto the area of concern and over a few days the weeds will wilt and die. You can repeat the process every few days if the weed is especially hardy and it should eventually die.
4. Smother them. Without light, dandelions can’t grow. The best way to prevent more growth is to smother them. In gardening beds and flower beds you can use mulch to help smother the dandelions out. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch over the beds to help keep the dandelions from popping up. They won’t have enough light and won’t be strong enough to push through.
5. Pull up the roots. The deeper you can get into the soil, the best you can pull up the entire dandelion root and prevent future growth. If you notice patches of dandelions, this method can be especially helpful. You can also try pulling up the roots after killing the dandelions using one of the methods below.
