I have often admired hanging flower baskets, but the cost of pre-made baskets has always stopped me from indulging myself. There are some annuals that I really enjoy, but I can’t plant them in flower beds because the rabbits would devour them in one night. So this year I decided that I was going to make several hanging baskets and fill them with my favorite annuals. The above pictured basket was purchased at Big Lots for $3.00. I filled the basket with a six pack of pansies that I bought for .99 at Home Depot and dirt. I have made three baskets so far at a cost of approximately $4.00 each and next year the only expense will be the flowers.

My 12-year-old is officially in charge of our neighbor's uncountable number of pre-made pots, as they leave for vacation bright and early Saturday morning.
For some reason, I feel just a tiny bit stressed.

Thank you Nancy! I enjoy your blog. I love the eclectic mix of tips and recipes interspersed though out your lovely pictures. Always a fun read!
Terry, I live to disappoint the rabbits!
Liz, The basket, liner, chain, and hook were all included in the purchase. All I had to do was remove the zip ties, put the liner in and make sure the hanger was properly attached. Then add dirt and flowers. I think there might be a biglots near you. Here is their web address: http://www.biglots.com. Like all bargain stores you have to shop carefully, some items can be found for less else where and the quality varies from item to item.

How do you make do-it-yourself hanging baskets? My mom loves hanging baskets and her birthday is June 5, so sending her the tools and instructions would be a great birthday present for her, especially if it's easy!

Beautiful, I never thought about doing them for $4.00. I hope the rabbits aren't too disappointed.
