Our kids play a vital role in protecting the earth and it's up to us to show them how. Start with these 5 Simple Ways to Teach Kids About Green Living.

Living green is a lifestyle that has to be introduced and reinforced over time. Kids are going to be exposed somewhat at school to clean, green living, but the world around them is still largely oblivious to what needs to be done. Our kids are the world’s best chance at a new beginning and it is up to us to get them rolling in the right direction. Green living is very teachable and kids will naturally want to embrace the ideas. Here are 5 Simple Ways to Teach Kids About Green Living to get them started in the right direction.

5 Simple Ways to Teach Kids About Green Living

Recycle tin cans. It is extremely simple, but a wonderful way to introduce them to the world of recycling. Gathering cans everywhere you go can help to enforce the need for such attention. When kids ask why you bother with something that pays so little, you can use that time to explain that it is not about the money. It is about our natural resources. Start simple and they will begin to understand as they go.

Plant a garden. Having a garden is the best way to teach kids about going green. Having clean, fresh vegetables will help your kids to stay healthy, and also educate them about where food comes from. When they see how food is grown and do it themselves, they will begin to understand what is happening in other areas. There is nothing like being invested in something to understand the need for change.

Plant kitchen scraps. This is a wonderful way to power your garden while eliminating waste. When you grow something and then have leftovers (like kale, celery, and potato), show them that this overage can be used to help somewhere. Nothing is created that is able to sustain waste forever, so use everything that you can. Kitchen scraps make wonderful starter plants or even compost. Show them that nothing is wasted in a green world.

Walk instead of drive. If you have a grocery store right up the street or you simply love to walk, head out and bring the kids along. Walking is a wonderful way to stay healthy and it keeps your car off the road for a short time at least. Cars are horrible for the environment in many ways and being aware of your footprints is at the heart of green living. Consider how often you use your vehicle and limit it where you can.

Have your kids volunteer. No matter what they are volunteering for, kids need to know what it means to think outside of themselves. This is at the heart of green living and selfless living is a necessity. If your kids are having trouble seeing beyond their own wants and needs, volunteering is a wonderful way to reset that switch. Have them volunteer for a green program in your area to double the effects, but be sure to get them involved somehow.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
