Sweetened Condensed Milk Substitute

Just because we are living out of the pantry does not mean we (and when I say we, I mean my husband) can do without essentials like French Vanilla Creamer. My creamer recipe calls for sweetened condensed milk, which I do not have on hand. There are some great suggestions for making your own creamer in this post, but they all start with milk, which I have in limited supply. I don’t want to take any more milk than I have to, so I am going to use the recipe below to create a substitute. It starts with nonfat dry milk, which I keep in my pantry to use in cooking and baking when my regular milk is in short supply.

Ingredients:

1 cup nonfat dry milk
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup boiling water
3 Tablespoons butter

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Process until smooth. Use immediately or store unused portion in the refrigerator. Makes approximately 1 1/4 cups.

What are your pantry staples? Any items that would be a hardship to give up for a week?

Thanks for this, Alea! I wondered about this a bit back and forgot to look into it! I'll have to write this down for safe keeping! 🙂

Oh where is the recipe for Granola bars!! I really want to try that. Granola bars are bloody expensive here in Egypt.

I don't use sweetened condensed milk much (although could eat a whole can of it if I had it) but it's good to know there are alternatives.

    Thanks,
    Forest.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
