Summer Reading Programs at Washoe County Library

Washoe County Library 2013 Summer Reading Program for kids - Dig into Reading
Do you want to encourage your kids to read this summer? The Washoe County Library has a fun Summer Reading Program for Kids: Dig into Reading. Their program begins tomorrow, June 1st. One of the best ways to encourage kids to read is to set the example, so while you are at the library signing your child up for the summer reading program, why don’t you and/or your teens sign up for a reading program too.

Kids, teens and adults are welcome to sign up for Washoe County Library System’s Summer Reading Program 2013 between  June 1st through August 31st

Kids Theme: Dig Into Reading

Teens Theme: Beneath the Surface

Adult Theme: Groundbreaking Reads

Kids can sign up starting June 1st, track their reading on the reading log and earn books and great prizes. Keep reading and sign up for more logs!  Teens and Adults are also encouraged to sign up and read to earn free books and be entered in the Monthly Grand Prize Drawing.

National Free Summer Reading Programs for Kids:

Scholastic’s Summer Challenge: Kids can keep track of their reading minutes by logging in.  In return, they can enter to win various sweepstakes including the following:

  • 39 Clues prize pack: all the books from both series one, The Clue Hunt, and series two, Cahills vs. Vespers, in a The 39 Clues Backpack.
  • Dear Dumb Diary prize pack: one DVD of the original Dear Dumb Diary movie, piece of original art by Dear Dumb Diary author Jim Benton, complete set of Dear Dumb Diary (12 books) and complete set of Dear Dumb Diary Year Two (4 books).
  • The False Prince prize pack: One autographed copy of The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen and one autographed copy of The Runaway King by Jennifer Nielsen
  • Harry Potter box set: One Harry Potter Hard Cover Boxed Set #1-7A 39 Clues Prize Pack

Registration opens up on May 6th.

Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading: This one requires kids to read eight books an then make a short recommendation on each one. They can then turn in their completed Summer Reading form at a store and choose a free book from this list! This program begins May 21st and runs through September 3rd.

Don’t forget you can find free books on the Daily List of Free Books on Kindle at Saving in Nevada. You don’t have to have a Kindle to read these books, you can download a free app to your computer or phone.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
