How to Tell if Produce is Organic at the Store

Some stores have a dedicated organic section. Others mix the organic produce in wth the regular produce and mark the organic produce with green or yellow signs, when they remember to use a colored sign. However, if you know a little number trick, you don’t have to rely on the colored signs to tell you if the produce is organic or not.

Most produce has a 4 digit code, but organic produce has 5 digits. The first number on organic produce is always 9. So, look at the code on the package or sticker. If it is 5 digits and begins with a 9, it is organic.

You know what I thought of when I read your post title? Some crazy test … like if it cuts glass, it’s a real diamond; or if you rub the pearls against your teeth and they’re rough, then they’re … hmmm, does rough mean real or fake?

I thought maybe you were going to suggest taking a bite out of it! ha! “The Organic Taste Test.” Your number method is much more reliable, and socially acceptable.

Great tip! I didn’t know that, I usually rely on their signs as they tend to section organic off from the others. 🙂

    Have a great day!!

    Blessings,
    Jill

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
