7 Tips for Growing Freesia- Freesia has a sweet smell and delicate trumpet blooms that come in many colors. It's easy to grow with these gardening tips.

Freesia lovers know how beneficial this plant can be to their landscaping. Freesia can be immediately recognized by its delicate trumpet shape and sweet smell, as it is found in many perfumes and bath and body products. Freesia come in a huge variety of colors, and their shape make them perfect for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden as well.  So why wouldn’t you want to give this flower a try? If you are interested in planting freesia but just aren’t sure what it takes for success, take a look below at these 7 Tips for Growing Freesia. You will find it can be easy to plant and even easier to enjoy!

7 Tips for Growing Freesia

1. Choose quality bulbs.
Freesia must be planted from bulbs, so you want to pick quality ones that aren’t cracking or dried out. Choose bulbs that are fresh and from a reputable provider, so you know they haven’t been sitting out or stored inappropriately. You might find that some gardening centers refer to the bulbs as “corms” which is essentially the same thing.

2. Pick the perfect planting spot.
A great spot to plant your freesia bulbs would be an area that enjoys morning shade, but at least 6 hours of early afternoon to late afternoon sun. This is the perfect amount of heat for freesia and can give them what they need to really take off.

3. Soil is everything.
Since you are dealing with a  bulb, you want to make sure you are giving it quality soil. This will give the bulb not only the nutrients but the environment it needs to grow and stretch its way to the top. Soil should be nutrient rich, loose, and well drained.

4. Plant at the appropriate depth.
You want to be sure you plant at the appropriate depth so your freesia corm is well protected and has room to grow. You should loosen the soil at least 6 inches deep, but plant the bulb about 2-3 inches deep. When planting bulbs in a cluster, they should still be 2-4 inches apart for proper spacing.

5. Know when to plant.
Knowing when to plant the bulbs can help you enjoy further success. If you live in a warmer region, you are free to plant in the fall. If you live in a cooler region, they will do best when planted in the spring. Should you experience a harsh and brutal winter where you live, you will want to dig the bulbs up at the end of the season for safe storage. You can replant them when the weather warms up again.

6. Practice regular feedings and care.
You want to make sure you pick off expired blooms and leaves when you see them, so the plant doesn’t drain itself trying to repair these parts. You can also pick blooms and enjoy them inside, where they may last longer than if you left them on the bulb. To pick, just snip from the base taking care not to pull up the bulb.

Freesias do like damp soil so always keep them watered and moist. You can use a gradual release liquid fertilizer to help with keeping the plants nourished and strong as well.

7. Bring bulbs inside.
Should the weather not be cooperating with you, you can in fact grow freesia indoors. Use a roomy pot with plenty of nutrient rich soil and drainage holes, and you should be good to plant. Plant 1-2 bulbs per pot and place in a sunny space for fast results.

If you are ready to bring this beautiful flower to your space, give these tips for growing freesia a try!
