Easy Tips for Starting a Compost Pile, including what materials to compost, what type of container to use for your compost pile, and more helpful tips. When you are trying to have a great organic garden, these easy tips for starting a compost pile are sure to come in handy. Not only will you be able to know exactly what is fertilizing your garden, you’ll be able to reduce the waste your family is putting in the garbage each day. So much of what we throw away is actually great compostable material to enrich our soul.

Easy Tips for Starting a Compost Pile

Use the right container. For many people a simple bucket or bowl inside is used to gather things like vegetable and fruit peelings. That can be handy as you cook and do meal prep, but you also need a container outside that will be functional. Wide containers are necessary to be able to mix things around as needed. You will also want something that allows moisture to drain so that you don’t end up with a muddy and moldy mess when rain comes, and you will want to keep it away from your house so flies and the occasional smell aren’t bothersome. Compost will have a smell as it decomposes, but usually it isn’t unpleasant. However, the fruit flies that tend to be attracted to the decaying fruits and veggies can often be bothersome.

Create a good mix of brown and green elements. Green elements are your fruits, vegetables, grass clippings and similar. Brown will be shredded paper, cardboard and the like. You want most of your compost to be green elements, but the brown elements are also great for helping to enrich the compost soil for the best fertilization. This is one of the most important tips for creating compost that is high quality .

Rotate regularly. You can’t just dump your peels into a bin and expect it to do what you want. You need to use a shovel or rake to rotate it regularly so the compost can work to your benefit. Keeping things rotated will help things to break down faster and easier.

Keep it moist. While you don’t want a compost heap that is a muddy pool of water, you do need moisture to help break things down. In dry climates or areas with lower rainfall, it’s important to check out your compost bin regularly and add a bit of water to make sure it is breaking down as you need it to.

These tips for starting a compost pile will easily make your fertilizer rich and great for use in your gardens this year.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
