If you’ve read any of my posts you know that I like to have my cake and eat it too. I strive to purchase quality, stylish clothing while spending very little. Finding stylish and inexpensive maternity clothes is both an art and science, especially when it comes to finding maternity wear suitable for winter. Winter coats, boots to fit swollen ankles, and other winter maternity clothing is more expensive and harder to find then t-shirts and strappy sandals for summer. I reside in Minnesota, or “Minnesnowta” as we like to joke here, so unfortunately winter clothing concerns me more than I would like.
How to Find Winter Maternity Clothes on a Budget
In my opinion, winter jackets and coats are the hardest pieces to find for a maternity wardrobe. A limited variety does exist in some shops and on the web but they are usually spendy and I think most of us mind spending a lot of money on temporary clothing items. Also, depending on how warm of a coat you need, you might be stuck with an even smaller selection. I know a handful of women that borrowed their husband’s or father’s winter jackets. Just like trying to clothe your baby bump in regular clothing that is larger than what you would normally wear, wearing a man’s coat will clothe you but certainly not in a flattering or stylish manner. So what’s a girl to do? One of my new favorite options for this situation is to rent. That’s right, you can rent maternity clothes! It’s a fantastic way to stock your closet with the temporary items at a fraction of the cost. You can find more info by checking out The Ultimate List of Where to Rent Maternity Clothes.
If renting isn’t for you, check out Zulily. Zulily offers high end women’s fashion (including maternity) and accessories, clothes and toys for the kids, as well as goods for the home at up to 90% off original prices. I shop Zulily often. My only words of caution are that returns are not accepted, and due to the way Zulily operates, it will take weeks for your items to arrive.
I find that winter appropriate maternity footwear can be tough to find. The growing baby bump shifts a women’s center of gravity making her less graceful and more prone to falling. If you encounter icy, snow covered walkways, be sure to select footwear featuring soles with strong grip. The other thing that makes shopping for winter maternity shoes a drag is that swollen feet severely limit your options. For a decent variety of quality, reasonably priced shoes check out: T.J. Maxx, Marshall’s, and the clearance section at your local DSW Shoe Warehouse. Although you can find terrific shoe deals online, I don’t recommend taking that rout unless it’s free and easy to make returns. You never know what shoe styles and sizes will fit your swollen feet.
Now that we’ve got maternity shoes and jackets out of the way, the rest of the wardrobe is much easier to find. Visit your nearest maternity clothing consignment shop. Everything you will find will be gently used and at a fraction of the cost. The next step is to fill the gaps in your winter maternity wardrobe. Refer to my Ultimate List of Where to Find Maternity Clothes Clearance Items for ideas on where to start.

That is a great idea! My husband was deployed to Iraq during my last pregnancy, so I borrowed all of his winter clothes which he left behind.
