How to Prepare Your Kids' Wardrobe for Winter- Have your kids' winter clothes organized and ready to wear by following these easy steps. Get started today!

One of the biggest chores of the year is pulling out the kids’ wardrobe and getting it ready for winter. I have done this same routine for many years so I’ve gotten it almost perfected. I hope this routine helps you prepare your kids’ wardrobe for winter.

How to Prepare Your Kids’ Wardrobe for Winter

Complete clothing inventory. I actually go through my kids’ clothing every summer, spring, fall, and winter to determine what still fits them and what doesn’t. If the clothes are still nice, then we keep them, if they are raggedy and not looking too great then we either donate or reuse it as a rag around the house. Knowing exactly what my kids have and what they need is important in this process.

Remove summer clothing. After I have determined what my kids will keep and what they won’t keep, it’s time to remove the summer clothing completely from the wardrobe. I might leave a few pairs of shorts and t-shirts just in case. I always remove the summer clothing from the closets and drawers before I add anything else.

Wash the winter clothing first. Before I add any winter clothing to the closets and drawers I do run the clothing through the washer. I think it’s so important to make sure my kids’ clothes are clean and ready for a new season of wear and tear. Of course, this is also the perfect opportunity to make sure there are no stains or major holes in the winter clothing.

Add winter clothing to the closets and drawers. At this point I have taken inventory of what we have in the closets, drawers, and storage totes.  I add what we do have so the kids have something to wear until I can go shopping for what they still need. Keep in mind that during this process I am also keeping notes of what my kids need clothing wise. I might find that four pairs of pants still fit them, so I’ll write down how many pairs I still need to grab.

Purchase clothing that’s still needed. One of the last steps for prepping my kids’ wardrobe for winter is going to a department store or second hand store to get what we need. I always bring my list with me and what I want to spend. I try not to go over the budget I’ve set for myself.

After I’ve completed my winter clothing shopping, I wash the clothes, and continue to add to what they already have! I follow this procedure and preparing the kids’ wardrobe for winter is easy peasy!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
