How to Save Money on Summer Clothes for Kids

In some areas of the country the temperatures are already climbing! This means getting the kids out of their winter clothes and putting on the shorts and flip flops. Buying the children summer clothing can put a huge dent in your budget, especially when back-to-school shopping comes around so quick.

Long ago I decided that I’m not going to buy my kids brand new summer clothing. They typically only wear them for a few months and we are outside so much that they ruin their clothes. Saving on summer clothing is crucial in my family!

How to Save Money on Summer Clothes for Kids

Shop Garage Sales – Garage sales are a great place to look for summer clothes for the kids. The spring and summer months are the most popular times for garage sales, which in turn makes it the perfect time to score summer clothes. Pick out a couple weekends to spend time looking through garage sales in your area. You might be surprised at some of the great stuff you find.

Attend a Clothing Swap – Clothing swaps are increasing in popularity. Parents understand how tight funds are and they like myself want to make their budget stress as far as possible. Clothing swaps provide the perfect opportunity to trade clothes that no longer fit your children for clothes that do fit your children. The one tip about clothing swaps is that they get really busy! If you want to find the best items you’ll want to show up early. Here are tips for hosting a clothing swap.

Check Thrift Stores – Thrift stores are a lot like garage sales, you can find some awesome deals at great prices. Personally, I prefer thrift stores over garage sales for a number of reasons. First of all I like that thrift stores have a large selection of items to choose from. I also save gas by not driving all over town going from garage sale to garage sale. I also enjoy shopping at thrift stores because many stores have the clothing organized by size and type of clothing! This makes it much easier to find exactly what I’m looking for. Here are more tips for finding clothes at thrift stores.

Ask Friends & Family – Do you have friends and family with children? If so start asking them to pass down clothing to your children. More times than not your friends and family are going to be more than happy to donate their out grown clothes to you.

Local Community Groups – Social media is for more than just posting pictures of your cute kids, sharing recipes and catching up with old friends. Social media sites like Facebook have great groups for communities in just about every area. If you aren’t already a member of  a community Facebook group, search for groups in your area. Once you are a member you can swap or buy clothing from other parents. I’m a member of a local community Facebook group and children clothing and toys are posted for free on a daily basis! This is a great resource for not only saving money on summer clothes for kids but also other household items you might be in need of.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
