I loved reading the Little House books and watching Little House on the Prairie as a girl, so I was excited to have the opportunity to review Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I am also giving one copy of the documentary away. You can enter the giveaway at the bottom of this post.
The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder Documentary
Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder is a one-hour documentary that goes beyond the Little House book series providing viewers with a glimpse behind-the-scenes of the true life story of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the inspiration for her books.
Wilder’s life as a writer, wife, and mother is a fascinating story. I thought my 8 year old son might find the documentary less interesting than his older siblings, but he was riveted by Wilder’s story! Laura Ingalls Wilder’s adventures are brought to life through a good balance of interviews with historians, passages from the Little House books, archival photography, paintings from famous frontier artists, and dramatic reenactments.
The DVD also includes 35 minutes of bonus features covering more topics from Laura’s world such as Native Americans and African Americans on the prairie, the Morgan Horse, and the American artist Harvey Dunn.
This documentary was narrated, directed, and co-produced by Dean Butler who is well-known for his memorable portrayal of Almanzo Wilder on the “Little House on the Prairie” television series.

It has been many years since reading this series. I always tell people that much of my childhood reminds me of Little House on the Prairie. We worked hard to build a home in Northern Washington and sustainable living the way of life. For many years we didn’t have electricity and relied on hauling water from the river and had to use a wood heater to warm up the water for the “bathtub” which was a water trough. So many memories and too many to list.

I loved Little House books when I was growing up and I have used them for homeschooling. I watched the series as a child and as an adult. It’s always good. Would love to see the documentary. On a different note, I thoroughly enjoy this blog/website and my son and I both follow it 🙂
