cinnamon apple syrup recipe in a jar

We love REAL maple syrup, but when I am out, I make The Cinnamon Apple Syrup to tide us over. It really dresses up plain old pancakes as well as compliments my pumpkin pancakes. Cinnamon Apple Syrup is a low cost alternative to maple syrup.

When I was a kid we didn’t ever buy maple syrup, instead I would make homemade maple syrup using 1/2 cup water, 1 cup brown sugar, and 1 1/2 teaspoons maple extract and I would boil it on the stovetop like I do with my apple syrup. And because I didn’t know anything different, I was happy with it.

The first time I tasted real maple syrup, I didn’t want to use my homemade concoction anymore. But sometimes I run out or things are a little tight. In those cases I make this cinnamon apple syrup. Since the taste is unique and not trying to mimic the maple flavor, I enjoy it for its own delicious flavor.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
