Chicken Noodle Casserole

September 21, 2011 by Alea Milham 9 Comments

This chicken noodle casserole recipe combines the flavors of homemade chicken noodle soup in a delicious casserole. While I was sorting laundry today, my four-year-old combined olive oil, peanut butter, and a Costco-sized container of cinnamon and put the mixture in coffee filters. When I reminded him that he was not supposed to cook withoutRead More

Homeschool Resources Meme

September 17, 2011 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

I was tagged in a Homeschool Resources Meme by Tricia at HodgePodge. Some of you may already know that I homeschooled our two oldest children from kindergarten through graduation. After homeschooling for 16 years this is my year off. But my sabbatical will only last for one year. We were blessed with a bonus babyRead More

Review: Clearly Fresh Bags

September 17, 2011 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

I was contacted this summer by Clearly Fresh Bags and asked if I would like to review their Clearly Fresh 1 Gallon Re-Closable Zip Bags. I researched their bags online and was please with what I read. A package of ten 1 gallon bags sells for $3.99, most of the bag is recyleable, and theRead More

“Real” Fast Food for Busy Nights

September 13, 2011 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

I am enjoying the cooler weather and the smell of new books, but I am not fond of the crush of activities that begin in September. Many nights I am pulling in the drive way ten minutes after I was planning on serving dinner. So I  do a little preplanning and combine it with recipes that IRead More

Mediterranean Garden Frittata - Quick and Easy Vegetable Frittata Recipe

Mediterranean Garden Frittata

September 12, 2011 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

I should let you know right off that my daughter named this dish. I wanted to call it Italian Vegetable Frittata, but she didn’t think that sounded romantic or exotic enough for her favorite frittata. She is a kindred spirit to Anne of Green Gables and often complains about the plebeian names I give my dishes.Read More

Southwest Steak Frittata

September 6, 2011 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

Frittatas are a great way to use up leftovers. They are also a wonderful way to sneak excess garden veggies into your kids at breakfast. And for some reason people are always impressed with frittatas. When I serve them, my friends and family always act like I went to a lot of trouble and IRead More

This flourless chocolate cookies recipe are chewy and taste like brownies! You can even add your favorite brownie add-ins if you wish. Flourless chocolate cookies are delicious and easy to make. The ingredient list is similar to a meringue cookie recipe except this uses whole eggs instead of just egg whites. The directions are differentRead More

Menu Plan – Week of September 5th

September 4, 2011 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

I haven’t shared a menu plan in months. Our schedule has been crazy busy this summer and I have just been winging dinner based on who is home and how much time I have to prepare dinner. Last week my two oldest children started back to college which means order is being imposed on myRead More

Using Whisper Counting to Teach Even and Odd

September 2, 2011 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

As soon as my children are comfortable counting. I introduce them to whisper counting. Why? Mostly because it is fun. You alternate whispering and shouting numbers and children enjoy whispering and shouting, especially if it is in a place that you normally don’t shout…like the grocery store! Whisper counting lays the foundation for teaching the conceptRead More

Scalloped Squash

August 28, 2011 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

I have a couple of friends coming over this week and since I have so much squash I left them a message on Facebook telling them that they were required to take as much squash as they could carry when they leave. My daughter saw my Facebook status and said it was the best newsRead More

Southwest Pasta Salad

August 25, 2011 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

I had some leftover grilled chicken from making my Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Fajitas. Even though I only grilled two chicken breasts they had rib meat attached, so one was more than enough to make fajitas for my family of five. I was contemplating what to do with the leftover fajita seasoned chicken when IRead More

Easy Stir-Fry with Squash

August 18, 2011 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

This is another one of those impromptu, throw together dinners that I wouldn’t normally share. However, I have felt convicted lately that I have not been sharing enough of our normal (for us) dinners. I am sharing this not because I think you should replicate this recipe, but so you can apply the concept toRead More

Frugal, Easy Homemade Book To Make With Your Child

August 18, 2011 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

One of the best ways I have found to encourage my children to write and draw is to help them make their own book. The directions below are for the first book I help my children make. It is fast, easy, and only requires 8 x 11 paper and scissors. If you are a perfectionist,Read More

Pasta Salad with Squash

August 10, 2011 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

I am still trying to use up the squash from my garden. It may be a losing battle, but I am not willing to give up yet. In this situation, I could best be described as stubbornly optimistic because I am not just harvesting squash by the basket full, I am harvesting it by theRead More

Southwest Squash Lasagna

August 8, 2011 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

This throw together meal was delicious, but I must confess it wasn’t premeditated. I have admitted before that I often have a hard time coming in from the garden in the evenings to make dinner. Earlier in the season when I had lots of greens, I could throw together a salad. Unfortunately, with the exception ofRead More

How to Make Superfine/Caster Sugar

August 2, 2011 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

Sometimes a recipe will call for superfine or caster sugar. When you go to the store you will also find this sugar called ultrafine sugar, baking sugar, and/or castor sugar. But it isn’t anything special and you don’t need to pay a premium price for it because it is easy to make yourself. All you need isRead More

Vegetable Frittata

August 2, 2011 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

My horse, Toddy, came home from the trainer’s this evening. We are all thrilled to have him home, even the cats came out to the pasture to welcome him home. With all the excitement and commotion I forgot to cook dinner, so I ran out to the garden, grabbed some veggies and whipped up aRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
