Asian Vegetable and Rice Frittata

January 9, 2012 by Alea Milham 9 Comments

My daughter’s favorite breakfast is leftover Chinese food and her favorite dinner is scrambled eggs. She’s a little backwards, but I am not going to judge because my favorite breakfast is leftover spaghetti. I decided to merge her two favorites into one dish that could be eaten any time of the day. I am accustomed to using cheese to add flavor toRead More

January 7, 2012 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

Bumpkin Chip Clip Why spend $2.00 on a plastic chip clip that is just going to break and end up in a landfill?  My bumpkin chip clip cost 4 cents (you can buy a bag of 50 for $1.99), is over 10 years old, and shows no sign of breaking: Ziploc Bag Dryer Ever wonderRead More

Beef Stew Casserole

January 5, 2012 by Alea Milham 14 Comments

I was surfing the web under the guise of research yesterday when I discovered a humorous post titled Why I Love this Man. The author, Karen Hawkins, wanted to make her grandmother’s soup but didn’t have all of the ingredients so she made some substitutions. The quinoa she used in place of the pasta soaked up allRead More

Garlic and Rosemary Red Potatoes

January 2, 2012 by Alea Milham 11 Comments

This quick and easy garlic and rosemary red potatoes recipe is made on the stovetop instead of in the oven. I was craving potatoes the other day, but I wasn’t sure I had enough time to make them with our dinner. So instead of baking potatoes or roasting them, I decided to boil quartered redRead More

Orange-Spice Ham Glaze

December 28, 2011 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

My kids love this spicy glaze  and told me that I needed to share it. Although this recipe calls for pear sauce, I should note that it could be made with applesauce instead. In fact, I did make my ham glaze with applesauce for years, but the last time I made it I had an openRead More

You will not miss the milk in this dairy-free fudge recipe! Dodging dairy can be a little difficult at the holidays when recipes with cream and butter are flowing pretty freely. My oldest son cannot consume dairy, but I do not want him to miss out on the delicious candies. I don’t want him to feel deprived;Read More

Cinnamon Bark Candy Recipe

December 7, 2011 by Alea Milham 14 Comments

I love my Easy Peppermint Bark, but my husband’s favorite bark is this Cinnamon Bark.  It is as easy to make as the peppermint bark and actually comes together faster. You can add any type of nuts to the bark including candied nuts. It only takes a couple of minutes to melt the white chocolate and theRead More

Chocolate Pecan Pie with Pecan Crust

December 6, 2011 by Alea Milham 11 Comments

On Thanksgiving day, I broke my “don’t experiment on the day of a dinner party” rule.  I was getting ready to make my Chocolate Pecan Pie recipe when I decided that I didn’t feel like making a pie crust. First I tried to convince my daughter to make a pie crust for me, but she didn’tRead More

During this hectic time of year it is important for me to plan easy recipes to fall back on. This simple recipe comes together quickly and is a lower fat alternative to Chicken Parmesan: no frying or breading! This is a one pan meal, which is nice when it comes time to clean up. I keep theRead More

DIY Gift: How to Make Coasters with Tiles

December 2, 2011 by Alea Milham 26 Comments

Coasters are easy to make and they cost very little to create, but they do take time. Usually you make coasters in sets of four. I bought six tiles, planning on ruining at least two. I’m a positive thinker that way. Actually, I ruined five and my son ruined the one perfect one (Note to self: don’tRead More

Asian Turkey and Rice Soup

November 30, 2011 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

This Asian Turkey and Rice Soup is a delicious twist on turkey soup. This afternoon my oldest son complained of having a sore throat. My first response was to make soup. I usually make Chicken and Rice Soup but this time I decided to experiment with leftover turkey. I also had leftover Basmati Rice andRead More

Beth from A Word From Aunt B is sharing a delicious Haystacks Recipe: My mom was great at making Christmas.  She found all sorts of holiday activities for us kids. We hung butcher paper the length of the hallway and painted a winter mural.  We made miles of paper chain.  Christmas cards were crafted, as wasRead More

Join Ebates Before You Shop Online

November 28, 2011 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

Seriously, Join Ebates before you shop online, especially on cyber Monday when you will receive double cash back at most of the stores.  I know it is your money, but it drives me crazy when you waste it. They are legitimate. I don’t buy a lot, but I have received over $40.00 cash back just buying theRead More

Homemade Turtle Fudge

November 27, 2011 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

This is a decadent variation on traditional chocolate fudge. This recipe make 4 1/2 pounds total, so it could easily be divided between 2 gift tins. I used my Easy Homemade Fudge Recipe as the base and then added melted caramels and pecans in the center and topped it with another layer of fudge. This recipeRead More

November 22, 2011 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

Today I shared my recipe for my Loaded Mashed Potato Casserole which is a delicious way to repurpose leftover mashed potatoes. It is also a great way to salvage your mashed potatoes if you accidentally made them too runny. Since I have potatoes on my mind, I thought I would share a few more mashed potato tips and aRead More

Purple Mashed Potatoes

November 22, 2011 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

This is a fun twist on traditional mashed potatoes. I have found blue potatoes to be quite hardy and enjoy growing them in my garden. Whenever I share them with my friends they ask what blue potatoes taste like. Blue potatoes taste like potatoes, only a little more so. If you usually eat bland russet potatoes, youRead More

Barbecued Beef Stuffed Potatoes

November 21, 2011 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

I often make pulled pork or barbecue beef when my children host a game party. It is an easy, throw it in the slow cooker and forget it meal. I always make a lot because I never know how many people will show up or which teenage boys will be going through a growth spurtRead More

Gluten-Free Minestrone Soup with Quinoa Pasta

November 18, 2011 by Alea Milham 11 Comments

This soup tastes a lot like Olive Garden’s Minestrone Soup, though I probably add more veggies than they do.  I use fresh spices  and vegetables from my garden when I have them, but it can be made using frozen vegetables and dried spices in the off season. I reduce the cost of this soup byRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
