Southwestern Spaghetti Pie and Uses for Leftover Pasta

May 26, 2011 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

I’m sharing my recipe for Southwestern Spaghetti Pie at $5 Dinners tonight. My Southwestern Spaghetti Pie recipe was born of a desire to not waste leftovers.  At the end of the week when I clean out the fridge I often have mix matched ingredients. Leftover noodles, but no sauce. Leftover taco meat, but no tortillas.Read More

Homemade Italian Seasoning Mix Recipe

How to Make Italian Seasoning

May 24, 2011 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

This evening I wanted to make lasagna, but before I could make lasagna, I needed to make Spaghetti Sauce. And before I could make Spaghetti Sauce I had to make Italian Seasoning… Making your own seasoning mixes allows you to tailor them to your tastes. It also gives you control over the quality and savesRead More

4 Ingredient Coconut Macaroons

May 19, 2011 by Alea Milham 11 Comments

My children love these chewy coconut macaroon cookies! They are easy to make and since they only have 4 ingredients they come together quickly, but they need to bake for about 25 minutes. Pretty soon it will be too warm to make these cookies, so I made several batches while we are still experiencing cool weather andRead More

Barbecued Boneless Ribs and Barbecue Sauce

May 16, 2011 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

The grill is officially open! I prefer barbecuing boneless ribs to ribs with bones for a couple of reasons. First, I do not like eating foods with my fingers (I don’t even eat corn on the cob or pizza with my fingers). Without the bone in the way I can easily use a fork andRead More

Menu Plan – Week of May 16th

May 16, 2011 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

I haven’t shared a menu plan in months. Our schedule has been crazy busy since January and I have just been winging it based on who is home and how much time I have to prepare dinner. Last week my two oldest children finished their finals and most of their after school activities are complete.Read More

Gluten- Free Hummingbird Bundt Cake

May 10, 2011 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

A Hummingbird Cake is usually a three layer cake with frosting between each layer, the top and sides. I will admit to being motivated in large part by laziness when I adapted the recipe to make it a Bundt cake. However, in the process I also made it a little less decadent. I replaced halfRead More

Bourbon Chicken

May 6, 2011 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

Saturday is Derby Day. My daughter became fascinated with horse racing when she was only seven years old. The stable where she took lessons also trained jockeys. She was so interested in horse racing that we took her to Del Mar to watch the Breeder’s Cup for her 8th birthday. When Patricia found out thatRead More

Easy Fresh Salsa Recipe - A quick and easy recipe for salsa using fresh tomatoes and peppers. No cooking required.

Fresh Salsa Recipe

May 2, 2011 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

My family fell in love with the fresh salsa at Baja Fresh. They were always trying to get me to make it, but I resisted because I couldn’t match that exact fresh salsa recipe. Then I realized my family didn’t care if it tasted exactly the same as the restaurant’s recipe, they just wanted freshRead More

Chicken and Greens with Tortellini

Chicken and Greens with Tortellini

April 29, 2011 by Alea Milham 9 Comments

This Chicken and Greens with Tortellini Recipe is an easy one dish dinner. Yesterday I had a craving for greens cooked in bacon drippings. I blame the craving on listening to country music while gardening. I had planned to serve a Strawberry Spinach Salad and Tortellini with Alfredo Sauce, but I couldn’t get over myRead More

Sweet Potato Pie with Easy Ginger Cookie Crust

April 26, 2011 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

Sometimes I want to make a pie, but I don’t feel like making a pie crust. Just thinking about rolling out dough exhausts me. That is when I either tell my daughter that if she will make pie dough I will make her a pie or make a cheater pie crust with gluten-free cookies. ThoughRead More

Sautéed Broccoli

April 26, 2011 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

I often wonder if I should share such easy recipes. Everybody knows how to sauté vegetables right? I didn’t until I was in my early twenties. While my mother did serve fresh salads with dinner, she usually just heated canned vegetables. So I was under the impression that I wasn’t very fond of vegetables. TheRead More

Mocha Fudge Pudding

April 22, 2011 by Alea Milham 13 Comments

A couple weeks ago I made Chai Spiced Pudding which, as odd as it sounds, was a huge hit. I told my family that I was planning on experimenting with more pudding flavors and my daughter asked if I could try making mocha fudge pudding. As a college student she appreciates caffeinated desserts. 🙂 TodayRead More

Roasted Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts

April 18, 2011 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

Dinner time has been unusually hectic the last couple of months. My oldest two children have many late afternoon and evening activities. Three nights out of the school week I arrive home at 6:50. I don’t have time to cook dinner, but I definitely don’t want my kids eating fast foods. I apply some ofRead More

Twice-baked potatoes are a holiday favorite meal – probably the tastiest and most artistic way to serve mashed potatoes.   Twice Baked Potatoes are an easy, yet elegant side dish. They can be prepared in advance making them an ideal dish for a busy holiday dinner. My mother-in-law calls her version Stuffed Baked Potatoes andRead More

Repurposing a Water Bottle to Create a Vase

April 14, 2011 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

My intent in repurposing water bottles was not just to create a vase, but to create a childproof vase because this little guy will not stop picking my daffodils: Every time I open the back door Andrew shoots out and quickly returns with flowers for me. I made several attempts to redirect him early in daffodilRead More

What I buy at Trader Joe’s

April 13, 2011 by Alea Milham 13 Comments

When I lived in Southern California, we had a lovely Saturday routine. My husband would make a double batch of pancake or waffles with the kids while I would do our weekly shopping. First, I would go to the farmer’s market, then I would go to Trader Joe’s and if there was anything I stillRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
