When my sister and I were discussing our current food obsessions, she shared this money saving tip with me. She buys frozen artichoke hearts instead of bottled artichoke hearts. Next time I went shopping, I began searching for frozen artichokes. I found a 12 oz. pound bag of frozen artichoke hearts at my Trader Joe’s for $2.29. Frozen artichoke hearts are not only much less than buying them fresh, but also a lot less work. And they cost less than the price of a 6.5 ounce jar, but I receive twice as many artichoke hearts.
I also like that the frozen artichoke hearts only contain artichokes and citric acid. So you don’t have to worry about competing flavors or unwanted ingredients when you use them in a recipe.
Trader Joe’s frozen artichokes come from Peru, so they aren’t exactly local. You may be able to find some locally grown artichokes if your local stores’ frozen section.
Recipes Using Artichokes:
- Broiled Catfish with Artichokes and Tomatoes
- Chicken and Artichoke Pizza
- Steak and Artichoke Frittata
What is your current food obsession? Have you found a way to save money on it?
