5 Tips for Growing Eggplant including when to harvest eggplant, how to protect eggplant from pests, and how to space eggplant and how to plant eggplant.

Eggplants are wonderful for adding color and flavor to your diet. They can be prepared so many ways and offer nutrients that can’t be beat. If you are interested in growing eggplants this year, take a look below at some helpful tips to get you started. These 5 tips for growing eggplant will help you grow eggplants that look and taste their best.

5 Tips for Growing Eggplant

1. Wait for the warmth.
While most veggies can be planted once the temperatures hit 50 degrees or so, eggplants like it a little warmer. Wait until the temperatures stay at 60 degrees or more. A little chilly air in the evening won’t bother the plant too much, but you don’t want to expose it to cool temps for too long or it can develop disease.

2. Give them some space.
When planting your eggplants, be sure to give them plenty of space. Eggplant needs a good two feet between plants for ample room to grow. Allow for another two feet between rows for plants that are cozy and content.

3. Use a light colored mulch.
Mulch will help keep weeds at bay and keep moisture in the ground. Use a light colored mulch as opposed to a dark red or black mulch. This lighter colored mulch will help the plant from becoming overheated which can hinder the growth.

4. Protect them from pests.
Mites and beetles love feasting on eggplant. You can help fight them off with a basic insecticide. If you wish for a more natural option, you can spray water to remove them or pick them off by hand.

5. Know when to harvest.
If you allow your eggplant to sit on the vine too long it will turn bitter and tasteless. Instead, know when to pick it. You want to remove the eggplant when the skin is bright and highly glossy.

Give these tips a try and in no time you will be an eggplant expert, growing the best and most beautiful eggplant on your block.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
