Does Boiling Water Kill Weeds?

In a previous post I told you I was letting my weeds grow on purpose and promised an explanation. Well, a friend told me that you can pour boiling water on weeds to kill them. I loved the idea and decided to give it a try with the leftover water from making jam. Here is the before picture:

And here is the after picture:

Unfortunately, it did not work for me. Yep, the weeds in Mordor like boiling water! There are several reasons that it might not have worked. First, the boiling point for water at my house is 204 degrees, next time I try it, I will make sure the water is above 212 degrees. The other factor is most of our weeds are succulents. They have a high tolerance for heat and that might have protected them from the effects of the boiling water. I will keep pouring my boiling canning water on various weeds to see if it works under the right conditions.

Besides watering the weeds, this week I quieted a noisy sliding glass door with paraffin, turned juice boxes into ice blocks, and whined about gardening in the desert.

I saved up my peas all week, and as you can see from the picture, on Friday I had almost accumulated the 1/2 cup required to make Brazilian Rice with Peas. By Saturday my cup overfloweth.

Confessions:

I measured my peas every day, not just on Friday, to see how many I had.

When I found Rew writing on his legs with magic marker, I grabbed…a camera and took several pictures before I took away the marker.

I'm patiently waiting for enough peas to ripen too! Glad you liked the brownies!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
