How to Save Money on Summer Lawn Care - frugal tips to help you save money maintaining your lawn and yard this summer.

As any homeowner can tell you, lawn care can be a job in itself and often cut into your budget and your time when you would rather be spending it elsewhere. Here are some tips on saving money on lawn care whether it is through a service or you do it yourself.

How to Save Money on Summer Lawn Care

Water when it makes the most sense. Some cities have specific days or times you can water, but if yours doesn’t, water at night or in the early part of the morning  before the sun is at its hottest. This may seem strange, but if you water during the day, most of what you spraying is evaporating. This means you must water more frequently and for longer, wasting water and making your bill soar. Also, make sure you are not watering your driveway or sidewalks as this is wasted water. Also, don’t over-water. Most types of grass only need an inch to an inch and 1/2 of water a couple times a week.

Don’t spend a ton of money on fertilizers. Instead, look for natural alternatives that can easily be found for free. This includes using things you wouldn’t even think such as flat soda or even beer.  Ideally, fertilization should not be done in the summer heat, but rather in the fall or spring.

Don’t over-mow. Doing so will cost you money in the long run because your grass will start to become sparse and you will need to re-seed it often. Also, pay attention to how low your law mower’s setting is on. If you cut too close, you will end up with grass that cannot seed on its own and will start to become less dense.

Before hiring someone to do routine lawn care, do your research.  You want to make sure they come with good ratings and recommendations as well as being bonded and insured. This will save you money in the long run by not having someone work on your property who could get injured and hold you accountable as well as making sure the service is right for you.

Cut down how much you need to take care of in the first place with strategic landscaping. Use wood chips, rocks and gravel to create a landscape that is inviting and needs less care.

Borrow some tools rather than buying them. Many communities have lending libraries for tools like lawn mowers, trimmers and an edger. These can cost a lot of money, but you may be able to borrow new tools at a minimal expense or even free.

Compare lawn care services before you sign a contract. You may be able to negotiate a lower price if you are prepared with what the competitors are charging. Also, take advantage of free consultations when it comes to lawn care. If you can get some from businesses in your area, you will be better equipped to haggle for the price you want.

Plant some plants that are natural pest deterrents. You can keep deer, bugs and other animals off your lawn by placing flowers like marigolds in areas around your yard. This will save you money by keeping your lawn in top shape with no need to seed it.

Use vinegar as a natural weed killer. Just make sure to be very specific about where you pour it or spray it. It can also kill most types of grasses.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
