10 Benefits of Listening to Books - Listening to Audible books is easy and makes chores more fun, exercise more enjoyable, road trips fly by, and more!

Do you wish you could fit more time for books into your busy life? I love listening to books it allows me multi-task and listen to a book while doing chores, exercising, or driving. I often choose an audio book in place of listening to music or watching TV.

10 Benefits of Listening to Books

Listening to a Book is Relaxing – I always have this fantasy of reading a book while relaxing by the pool, but the reality is that I don’t like taking my eyes off my kids. Even though they can swim and there are multiple life guards, I just can’t allow myself to enjoy a book. Listening to an audio book allows me to keep my eyes on my kids while listening to a book.

Listening to a Book is Entertaining – The books are often read by actors. They have lovely voices and they know how to use them to dramatize the books and bring them to life. It is a different experience than reading a book and you notice things that you often miss when reading a book. I often like to listen to a book that I have read in the past.

Cleaning while listening to a book makes housework more fun

Listening to Audio Books Makes Chores Go By Faster – I do not enjoy cleaning or folding laundry, but listening to a book while doing housework makes the experience much more pleasant. I have even found that when I want to listen to another chapter, I will look for more housework to do to give myself an excuse to listen to my audio book.

Listening to Books Makes Road Trips More Fun – We started listening to audio books when my kids were in elementary school. It allowed them to listen to interesting books that were above their reading level. Audio books provided a very interesting way to pass the time while traveling, so much so that we started listening to books in the car on shorter trips around town.

You Can Share the Experience with Others – Listening to books as a family doesn’t have to be limited to long car rides. There is something to be said for all being on the same page. You end up with your own minibook club as you chat about the book in between listening to chapters.

Audio Books Expand Your Horizons – I have also found that my husband and kids are more willing to listen to books that are outside of their favorite genre. My kids enjoy listening to biographies, though they wouldn’t normally check one out at the library unless forced to for a school project. And my husband rarely picks up a fiction book, but does enjoy listening to them with us as a family.

exercising while listening to audible books

Listening to Audio Books Makes Exercise Less Painful – Audio books can provide much needed distraction when exercising. I like to listen to audio books while on the treadmill or exercise bike. When I feel like quitting, I can often keep myself exercising for “one more chapter”.

You Can Supplement Your Education with Audio Books  – Is there a classic or two that you never made it through? Audio books are the way to make your way through those books! Audible also has The Great Courses lectures allowing you to listen to interesting lectures on topics from History, Science, Art and even Music Theory.

How to Listen to Audible on your favorite device

Listening to Books on Audible is Easy – Gone are the days of having to keep track of CDs. With Audible you can listen to books on your iPod, Smartphone, Kindle, Tablet, or computer. You just visit the support page for your device and download the app.

Audible Makes Audio Books Affordable – My husband likes to list to books on his commute to work. Books on tape were quite expensive and messy – the front seat was always littered with CDs and cases that were easily  scratched and broken. Now we use Audible and save 30% off each audio book. Bonus: we no longer lose or break essential CDs, so they last forever! If you don’t have an Audible membership, you can try Audible for FREE for one month and receive a free audio book.

My Summer Listening List

The Hunt for Vulcan …And How Albert Einstein Destroyed a Planet, Discovered Relativity, and Deciphered the Universe. I think my husband and sons will enjoy listening to this book with me when we drive to California.

Saving Saffron Sweeting by Pauline Wiles. This is my fun beach read listen of the summer!

The Warden by Anthony Trollope. After watching Doctor Thorne last month, I have been wanting to revisit the Chronicles of Barsetshire, but I don’t have lots of time to reread Trollope’s thick tomes. This book and the rest of the series should help get me through quite a few loads of laundry as well as a few workouts.

The Oscar Wilde Collection – Listening to Oscar Wilde’s plays will provide hours of entertainment for the whole family!

Building a Better Vocabulary – There will be a little covert education going on this summer. This is a series of interesting lectures on the etymology and morphology of the English language. My boys will get sucked in and not realize they are doing summer school.

What books would you like to listen to this summer? Try Audible for FREE for one month and receive a free audio book.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Audible. The opinions and text are all mine.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
