When you think of meal prepping, your probably think of it as something best suited for those with large families. This leaves you wondering how you can do it effectively if it’s just you and your spouse or even a roommate. While a lot of people that do batch cooking cook for more than 1 or 2 people, it’s ideal for anyone; singles, couples and large families alike! Really, it’s for anyone that wants to save time in the kitchen and undoubtedly save money, too. Here are some helpful tips on How to Meal Prep for Couples.

How to Meal Prep for Couples

Choose meals that are easy to make for small crowds. Many meals are made for large crowds such as lasagna or casseroles. Try to choose meals that can be easily adapted for a smaller portion size such as tacos, sandwiches, one pot meals and salads. If you have the right equipment to do so, such as smaller bake ware, you could make even larger dishes in smaller sizes as well.

Plan on using leftovers for more meals. I batch cook for just my husband and I because we share a different diet than the others in the house often. This means I plan on having leftovers and we use them to create new dishes as well as plan on there being leftovers for lunches.

Experiment with recipes. Since it’s just the two of you, and often no kids involved, that can mean you can be more adventurous. Try to make a goal of trying one new recipe every month and if you both like it, add it to your recipe collection for later planning and meal prepping.

Batch cook all your proteins at once. No matter how many people you are meal prepping for, you can save tons of time by batch cooking all of your meats and proteins at once. Working with just the two of you means that you can use smaller appliances and still get the right amount.  I usually cook my chicken two ways when I make it for the week. I always like to have shredded and diced chicken on hand and I do them at the same time by poaching chicken in my slow cooker for shredding later and sautéing some diced chicken in a pan at the same time. Since it’s just myself and my husband, there is plenty for the week doing it this way.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
