Between pet food, vet care, and other expenses, owning pets can end up costing quite a bit. Here are some key tips on How to Save Money on Your Pets.

Your pets are a part of your family and as such, you’re likely spending quite a bit taking care of them. Between high pet food costs, vet care, and other everyday expenses, your pets can often end up being more expensive than your kids in the long run. That’s why it is so important to save as much money as possible on your pets whenever you can. Here are some key tips on How to Save Money on Your Pets.

How to Save Money on Your Pets

Don’t own more than you can care for. The biggest issue that I see families having with their pets is that they own too many. If you have more than you can care for, not only are you hurting your budget, but you’re not giving your animals the best life possible. Yes, your fur babies should be yours, but if they will get better care with another family that can afford them, it may be time to let them go.

Use coupons and apps. Coupons and money saving apps can go a long way toward lowering your immediate pet expenses such as food or cat litter. Apps like Ibotta and Checkout 51 frequently have pet offers and they will both stack with printable coupons off the same products. Use them together to save the most money in your pet budget.

Make your own pet food. Making your own pet food can be a great cost cutting measure for two reasons. First, it allows your family to put out less waste and to buy less since most ingredients can be found in your own kitchen right now. Secondly, it is better for your pet meaning they have less health issues and fewer vet visits.

Get pet insurance. It might sound silly to have insurance on your pet, but if you do, you’ll save money when it does come time to take them to the vet. Most of them work just as your own insurance does with a deductible that must be paid first. Even with this deductible, you could save significantly if your pet ever needs a major treatment or service.

Have a pet savings account. If you don’t want to take pet insurance, having a savings account set aside for your pet expenses can help you save too. It will allow you to buy on sale and to have a fall back when your pet needs to be seen by a vet.

Keep your pets active. The biggest way that you can save money on your pets is by keeping them active. Aside from feeding them, health costs are the biggest costs associated with owning pets. Keeping them active helps to keep them healthy which will lower your costs in the long run.

My Sheltie’s go to the VET when necessary, and I have NATIONWIDE for their pet insurance, also I cook for my fur babies which is less expensive verses dog food and in which is full of crap anyway!!!! They look great and strut their stuff when they go with me, because they are “SERVICE DOGGIES”!!! They eat fish, chicken, steak, ham, and pork, which includes their veggies and rice. Included is eggs, (hard boiled, scrambled) and if I fry it is in coconut oil!!!!! Treats basically are chicken legs par boiled (1/2 raw) bone and all because the bone will not splinter if not cooked all the way, in other words partial raw!!! “THEY HAVE THE BEST THICK COAT ONE CAN IMAGINE!!!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
