5 Minute Decluttering Session

When I read a friend’s  tweet about decluttering her living room, two things ran through my mind: I just decluttered the house last month and even if there is still clutter lurking, I don’t have time right now. Then I decided to take a box and see how much clutter I could get rid of in 5 minutes. My thinking being the less time I gave myself, the less time I would have to justify why I needed to keep each item rather than get rid of it. And if truth be told, the items are going to be stored in the garage until I hold my garage sale in May, so if I have declutter’s remorse, I can bring the item back in the house.

I could not get a picture of my china cabinet because of the poor lighting, but here is a picture of my buffet, after I cleaned out the clutter:
April 2010 066Look how much came out of there! I will clean the silver one last time before the garage sale, but I am excited about how much work I am saving myself in the future.
April 2010 069I did keep the family silver, as well as any piece that had our name engraved on it, but I was ruthless about everything else.

If that's real silver, you should think about selling it at a precious metals store! I sold a bunch of silver serving pieces about 2 years ago and made $700! Precious metals are very lucrative right now and you could be missing out on a LOT of money if you just sell it at a garage sale. Make a few calls before you put it out this weekend! Good luck.

I should be so energetic!! I love the feeling of decluttering and getting things all nice and neat–problem is it doesn't stay that way long. I have a very lazy family—and 3 dachshunds and they all(6) of them–make messes for me to clean up!!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
