Must Have Items for Your College Dorm Room- Heading to college in the fall? Be sure to include these 7 items when shopping for dorm room essentials.

As a new college student, you’re likely getting excited about decorating your dorm room and heading off to college on your own. It is exciting to finally get to have total say in what is in your room, but it is also super easy to forget things in all of the excitement. These Must Have Items for Your College Dorm Room are a few of those things that you can easily forget.

Must Have Items for Your College Dorm Room

Laundry Baskets – Laundry baskets can be easy to forget until the day you need to do your first load of wash. You’ll realize just how badly you need a laundry basket. You won’t want to have a huge hamper style basket, but something small that can hold a week’s worth of clothing will do just fine.

Desk Lamp – When you’re studying late, your roommate might not appreciate the main room light being on. Having a desk lamp allows you to keep studying if you need to without disturbing anyone while they’re sleeping.

Crockpot or Toaster Oven – As a college student, you will likely be pretty broke. Do you want to eat ramen all of the time? Having a crockpot or toaster oven in your room will allow you to cook for yourself so that ramen is a thing of the past. Just be sure to check your school’s rules to make sure you’re allowed to have them.

Shower shoes – This one may seem silly, but when you think about the fact that the showers in your dorm will see hundreds of feet each day, it makes sense. Making sure that you have a pair of shower shoes to keep your feet protected from things like athletes foot is so important!

Alarm clock – You might use your phone for your alarm clock already, but what happens if the battery dies in the middle of the night? You’re late for class! Having an actual alarm clock that plugs into the wall can save you a very large headache and possibly save your grades too!

Keurig – Do you have a morning coffee habit? Save your money by skipping Starbucks and invest in a Keurig instead. You’ll spend more money out of pocket at first, but in the long run, it will save you both money and time. The best part? You won’t have to give up your morning coffee!

Something From Home – Finally, one thing that is very easy to forget but that you absolutely will need is something comforting from home. Whether it’s a favorite stuffed animal, a family photo, or your blanket, be sure to bring something that comforts you when you’re feeling homesick. Don’t think you’ll end up homesick? You absolutely will.

I’m sure that these are not the only items that you may forget when you’re packing for your college dorm room. However, they are the easiest to forget. Making the transition to being on your own is hard enough, don’t forget these 7 items. They will make things so much easier on you and the people around you.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
