Road Food Waste

Most of my food waste for this week comes from not planning well for outings. I ended up buying food that we do not normally consume, so it went uneaten.

Bring a sandwich because eating your friends is awkward

We think of the the local shop that sells t-shirts with the above saying printed on the back every time we cross the mountains in winter and it probably does influence to buy food unnecessarily. The apple juice was bought last winter (along with other convenience store food) when we stopped at a gas station while crossing Donner Pass in a blizzard. We wanted to have extra supplies in case they closed the road and left us stranded (does happen, but fortunately didn’t on our trip). My kids thought the juice was too sweet, so the leftovers sat in the cupboard. I should have passed it on to a friend instead of letting it expire.

Sometimes kids just want to play with their food

The milk was bought while shopping at Walmart. Rew said he was thirsty, so I went into the McDonald’s and bought him a milk. Then being the two year year old that he is, decided that what he really wanted was to drink (translates to splash and play) in the drinking fountain. I should have made sure I knew what Rew meant when he said he was thirsty. And since I purchased the milk I should have put it with the other milk, so it didn’t get lost at the back of the top shelf.

Proof that I respond to blogs even when I don’t respond to blogs

Sometimes I read blogs and don’t leave a comment (gasp!). Perhaps Rew interrupted me, maybe I am supposed to be folding laundry instead of goofing off on the web, or the garden’s call is stronger. However, I still think about what I read and sometimes it causes me to act. I was inspired to go through my condiments after reading Angela at My Year Without Spending last food waste post. I found mustard and a bottle of dressing that had expired. I washed out the bottle and put it in the recycling bin before I took this picture. Reading how others are minimizing food waste has made me more effective in eliminating waste in my household. If you would like to see how others are doing in their quest to eliminate food waste visit Food Waste Friday at The Frugal Girl.

You're not the only one. The only reader/lurker out there. Lately my life has been very busy but I still spend my quiet time blog reading. Most often my brain is taxed and I have no good comment or question so I carry on to the next blog.

Thanks for coming to read when I have time to post. Double thumbs up for replying when you have time.

No, I haven't opened one. That is a good idea. I bet we wouldn't mind the sweetness so much if it was supposed to be something sweet like lollipops.

What a great week for you. More than the 'we did it; we didn't have any food waste' posts, I LOVE the ones where people start really thinking and changing their awareness and perspective on things.

I would still try the apple juice; in a smoothie or frozen into lollies or something – have you opened one to see what it is like?

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
