How to Save on Your Gas Bill in the Winter- These helpful tips will reduce your gas bill while still keeping your home warm during the cold winter months.

Whenever the cold air creeps in, turning up the heat is our first instinct. However, you then start thinking about the gas bill and what it can cost you money wise, so your second instinct is to turn down the heat. It’s important to keep the gas bill down this winter without losing your sanity. These tricks will help you do just that.

How to Save on Your Gas Bill in the Winter

Close vents in rooms you’re not using. I’ve learned that closing vents in unused rooms can help us save a ton of money over the winter months. Just remember to keep the doors shut and sealed so no cold air is leaking out into the other rooms. Just don’t forget you closed the vents because those rooms will get incredibly cold without any warm air running through them.

Seal all air leaks around the home. Would you believe that air leaks are a major cause of high gas bills? It’s important to take time to seal all air leaks around the home before winter hits. There’s nothing worse than trying to seal an air leak when it’s freezing outside. I always check around all parts of the window to make sure there are no leaks. Also, around doors is a major vessel for leaking air.

Add insulation where necessary. It’s truly amazing what insulation can do for your home. If you do not have a lot of insulation, it may be the right time to install it. While this can be an expensive step, the pay off over the long run makes it all worth it.

Keep the temperature down as much as possible. The higher you turn your thermostat, the more expensive your gas bill will become. If you have to, put a sticky note by the thermostat as a reminder to everyone. Did you know that keeping the temperature down on your water heater is also a good idea? This can also be an major money guzzler during those winter months.

Use electricity when you can. Use a small electric heater to help keep certain areas of your home warmer during the winter months. You don’t have to crank the main heater up to full blast. Just keep it on a temperature that you feel comfortable with to keep those really cold rooms warm.

Making sure your home is warm is very important. However, you should also try to keep the gas bill as realistically affordable as possible.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
