How to Stay Fit the Old Fashioned Way- Here are some 'old school' ways to exercise and stay fit without spending a lot of money or using fancy equipment.

If it seems like the women and men you see in vintage photos were much fitter and healthier than we are today, you would be pretty accurate. This is due to many factors. Activity level, diet, and modern lifestyles play a large role in how much harder it is to stay fit these days. If you are anything like me, you relish those vintage images and wonder what life was like then for the people in them. The good news about that old lifestyle is that it can be a part of yours with a few adjustments. Here are some tips on How to Stay Fit the Old Fashioned Way.

How to Stay Fit the Old Fashioned Way

Walk more. Not too long ago, people didn’t have more than one car or a single car, period. Those that did, did not use it for every little trip. People walked a lot more. The car was only used when it was necessary and a walk that was only 1/2 a mile was not one of them. If the walk will take you less than 30 minutes, try to do it instead of always hopping into your car.

Eat more vegetables. People ate a lot healthier food in the past. Sure, the food was laden with bacon and fats, but it was closer to the source than our convenience foods of now. Try to add in more foods that are closer to their raw form into your diet.

Do things the ‘hard way.’ We have so many modern conveniences that we have almost become lazy these days. If the day is nice and you have the space, why not hang your clothes to dry instead of transferring them to the dryer? Find ways to avoid modern machines whenever you can.

Take the stairs more. Stairs were the most available option in days past and most places still have that option for the public. Take the stairs next time and skip the elevator or escalator.

Make exercise a daily thing and DIY a lot of your equipment. Even doing 30 minutes of exercise a day can really help you stay fit. Since gyms and equipment were not something most people could afford, they found ways to make their own equipment. Try filling milk jugs with sand or water for weights.

Spend less time watching TV or using other devices. We have become so accustomed to sitting down and watching TV or playing on our devices that it’s second nature now. Instead, make it a habit to go for a walk.

Get more sleep. You may not believe it, but sleep is paramount to getting fit and staying fit. Our bodies perform their best when we are well-rested.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
