The Great Flower Compromise

As my husband was leaving work to pick me up on one of our first dates a colleague asked, “aren’t you going to bring her flowers?” It was too late for my husband to purchase any before picking me up, so when he arrived he greeted me by apologizing for not bringing flowers. Being my usual diplomatic self I replied, “please don’t bring me cut flowers, they’ll just die”. My husband found this very entertaining and a bit odd, but he honored my request. After we had been married a while, occasions arose when he felt the desire to bring me flowers, but instead brought me potted plants (of course laughing while reminding me of my earlier comments on cut flowers). We have been married for over twenty years and on more than one occasion he has come home and said, ” I wanted to bring you a plant, but a hanging pothos just didn’t capture the sentiment I wanted to convey”. So I have compromised and now let my husband bring me Alstroemerias. They sell for $3.00 – $4.00 a bunch, have a mild scent, and they keep for up to 2 weeks. My husband brought me the flowers in the picture on Mother’s Day and they still look great. I have to admit that I enjoy having cut flowers in the house and my husband enjoys gloating over how long the flowers he brings me live!

Rew saw me taking the picture and asked if he could “smell and smile”, which was really just his way of working an angle so that he could stand on the furniture.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
