Hardwood floors are an investment and they must be cleaned properly to maintain their beautiful finish. Use these helpful Tips for Cleaning Hardwood Floors.

If you have ever had hardwood floors installed, you know that they are not exactly the cheapest floor option. However, they are absolutely beautiful and well worth the money you pay for them because they will last for years to come. With so many wood choices out there, you can truly create your own unique look.

Caring for hardwood flooring is a bit different than tile or linoleum. There are specific things you need to do in order to clean them safely and without ruining the finish. Here are some Tips for Cleaning Hardwood Floors that will keep them looking as stunning as they are now for years to come.

Tips for Cleaning Hardwood Floors

First and foremost, make sure you know what kind of wood floors you have. The finish will determine how best to care for them. The most common types of floors are untreated/unfinished, oil based, and surface sealed floors. The Today Show has a great article on cleaning each type of floor.

Don’t rely on water alone to clean your floors. It simply won’t do a good enough job of removing deep dirt buildup even if it’s hot. Plus, over-soaking your floors can cause issues with it. After all, it is wood.

Get two mops. Use one for just dry mopping. You can apply some dust agent to it to help it attract dust. Do this before you wet clean it or scrub it in any way to prevent scratching when you do. You can also use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum as well to get debris and dust off your hardwood floor before you wet mop.

Use only approved floor cleaning agents for hardwood. Depending on your sealant, using other types of cleaners can remove the sealant and make your floor susceptible to serious damage and wear. This includes natural things like vinegar.

Don’t use too much water when you clean your floors. Many cleaners will want you to dilute with water and this is fine, but make sure you are only damp mopping. If you use more water than intended, make sure to dry it up and not allow it to air dry. You can also point a fan near the areas to help them dry quicker.

Never use commercial furniture polish on your floors to make them shine again. Not only will they make your floor dangerously slick, but they are not made for this kind of cleaning or wood. Instead, if you are concerned about the shine of your floor, hire a professional.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
