To Buy or Not to Buy: The Sunday Paper Coupon Dilemma

imageI do not subscribe to the local paper; I prefer to read the news online, but I do occasionally buy the Sunday paper for the coupon inserts. I used to buy the paper every Sunday, but was sometimes disappointed that the coupons were not ones that I could use and sometimes the paper did not contain any coupons at all. I have since learned that there are usually not any coupon inserts in the paper on holiday weekends, so I don’t bother to buy it on those Sundays. I also discovered Sunday Coupon Preview, a website which tells which coupons will be included in the Sunday paper that week. I can review the coupons and decide if I want to buy a paper, or perhaps several if there are some high value coupons that I can use.

Julie, I will have to look and see if any of our local gas stations offer such a great deal!

I check the previews, too! I don't buy the paper unless it has more $$ in coupons than the cost of the paper. I know when there are no coupons that week, too, which is a bonus.

I only subscribe to the Sunday paper. I used to buy the paper from a rack or in a store. I found that sometimes no coupons were in those papers. I questioned this at the newspaper office and was told that they don't always put the coupons in those papers–they do however make sure the coupons are in the subscribers papers. I guess they may have told me that so I would subscribe to their paper though. I prefer to believe that people don't lie to me so I did start taking the Sunday paper. I know, I know–I'm probably a sucker but that's just how I am!!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
